Local attractions

Life is all about being outdoors in these parts, with Hocking Hills State Park (15 minutes’ drive) as a big draw. The land is crossed with waymarked forest hiking trails suitable for families hiking with kids, and more adventurous stuff too. An easy looped walk leads to Ash Cave, or you can head up a strenuous stone stairway to the stately cave complex at Rock House. A couple of short but testing mountain bike trails wind through the park as well. Renowned fishing spot Lake Logan State Park (20 minutes) is popular for catching northern pike, bass, bluegill and catfish at a peaceful lake surrounded with pine forest. It’s also a spot for wildlife watching: if you’re quiet on the forest tracks, there are frequent appearances by raccoons, skunks, squirrels and deer. Scattered with deep gorges, abandoned mines and ancient mounds, Lake Hope State Park (half an hour) is home to seasonal guided activities, varying from winter birding walks (look for barn owls, red-tailed hawks and woodpeckers) to alfresco meditation among the trees.

Hilltop Sunrise 1 bedroom cabin

Liked: The cabin was very clean and had everything we needed besides a bathroom which we knew before we booked. The location is close to area attractions. The check-in process was easy. The port-a-potty was clean and didn't smell which was a pleasant surprise. We were impressed with how many cooking supplies were available. We had not intended to eat at the cabin but ended up going to Kroger in Logan and making our own lunch. We liked that while the "master bedroom" space didn't provide actual privacy when it comes to noise, it did close and lock which gives everyone in the cabin a space to change clothes without an audience. This is a great place for families on a budget to have a quick weekend getaway in Hocking Hills!

Disliked: The driveway is pretty steep. A smaller car might struggle making it up the hill. The grass in front of the cabin was really tall so it wasn't fun to walk through wet grass to get to the car or port-a-potty but we saw someone arriving with a mower and it had recently rained so we knew we just happened to be there a few days before this issue was being addressed.
