  • A half-hour drive from Ann Arbor; two state reserves close by
  • Spring-fed swimming pond, shared kitchen and yoga sessions available
Feeling a little frazzled? A stay at EarthWell Retreat Center should go some way to sorting you out. Stays at this serene Michigan park for guests aged 16 and over are within 40 acres of natural prairie, forest and wetland, surrounded by a further 100 acres of Washtenaw County Nature Preserve. This is a peaceful spot indeed… How you choose to relax is entirely up to you – you could just sit quietly to breathe the fresh air and take in the scenery, or get involved with yoga and meditation sessions. Or you could work those stresses out of your system with walks on the hiking trails that run through the park and nature reserve, followed by a cooling dip in the spring-fed swimming pond. You can also launch canoes or kayaks on the pond if you’d like to paddle off to the far corners, or borrow a flotation device to experience a slower pace. There’s quite the community atmosphere at this place – guests all have access to the modern common house for a shared kitchen and dining area and a gathering space/yoga studio. This building also houses the bathrooms and showers (they’re accessible 24 hours a day with a key code) and there are solar-powered compost toilets a short way from the accommodation too. Two families live on the property who are quiet and respect your privacy; handily, the can be called upon should any issues arise. Look around you and the peaceful vibe will probably have you believing you’re out in the middle of nowhere – but in fact it’s only a 10-minute drive to either Manchester or Chelsea to pick up supplies in the shops or dine out in restaurants and cafés. Central Ann Arbor is a 25-minute drive away.

Local attractions

Once you’ve conquered all the trails at EarthWell, you’re not done – there are plenty more miles awaiting at Waterloo State Recreation Area (15 minutes' drive) and Pinckney Recreation Area (25 minutes), with trails for hikers, bike riders and horse riding. If all the relaxation time of your retreat has left you craving an adrenaline hit, how about jumping out of a plane with Skydive Tecumseh (25 minutes)? At the opposite end of the spectrum, more chilled-out days can be had on an outing with Tecumseh Paddling Company, strolling around Hidden Lake Gardens or perusing the art at Ella Sharp Museum (all half an hour). A day out in Ann Arbor (half an hour) is a good idea too – this small, friendly city has some great places to eat, plus sights including the Michigan Museum of Art, the Nichols Arboretum and the gorgeous buildings of the Law Quadrangle.
