  • Lakeside campsite in a nature reserve
  • Direct access to a lakeside beach with boat hire
  • Free fishing lake well stocked with perch, pike and zander
There's not only direct access to a beach at Herrfallets Fritids och Konferensanläggning, 15 kilometres from Arboga in Sweden's Västmanland County – it's also edged by a lake in which guests can fish (for free) for specimens including perch, pike and zander among its well-stocked waters: how fab. And the lake you'll be landing fish at or basking contentedly on its beach? It's Lake Hjälmaren, the fourth biggest in Sweden at 60 kilometres long with a surface of 483km²: take a rowing boat, pedal boat or canoe out onto its waters from the sandy beach. Herrfallets Fritids och Konferensanläggning is in the Oset-Rynningeviken nature reserve on the shores of the lake, with direct access to the beach as well as to a four and a half-kilometre hiking trail for birdwatching and nature spotting (look out for the local beavers). Cross country skiing, snowmobiling and ice skating are all available nearby in the colder months. Facilities include a football pitch, a volleyball court and a playground for getting active on site. There's also a large site restaurant, a food shop, free wifi and a TV room. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: Absolutely awful. Unhelpful, everything so far away from pitch. Pitches sodden. Surrounded by permanent caravans with extended rooms with temporary decking. Fresh drinking water was yellow. Left after 1 night, although paid for two. Overall poorly kept.

Liked: Beautiful setting by the lake. Excellent toilet facilities, EHU and waste disposal. The reception staff were very helpful and pleasant. Loads of activities if you are with kids or can be peaceful also as they are well spread out. Wi-Fi only available at the reception and mobile data can be a bit patchy. Would certainly return, but out of school holidays.

Local attractions

Spectacular Lake Hjälmaren should keep all ages and most tastes busy for some time when staying at Herrfallets Fritids och Konferensanläggning, whether you want to sunbathe, paddle or swim, cast off for perch and pike, or take a vessel out into the water. Hjälmaren is adjacent to Lake Mälaren, with the two big islands of Selaön and Svartsjölandet for sightseeing and more nature spotting. The Viking Age settlements of Birka on the Mälaren island of Björkö, and Hovgården on the island of Adelsö, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites; history fans should also like the barrow of Björn Ironside on the lake's island of Munsö, and the Swedish royal residence of Drottningholm Palace, on the island of Lovön and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To the west of Lake Hjälmaren is the city of Örebro, home to spectacular medieval Örebro Castle, Marieberg shopping centre and Gustavsvik, the biggest waterpark in northern Europe and one of Sweden's most popular attractions. Other recommended options are Tuna Park shopping centre and Parken Zoo in Eskilstuna, the Sala silver mine, more shopping and Säfstaholms Castle at Vingåker, fishing at the waterway of the Hjälmare canal, and the manor house and grounds of Julita Manor, on the shores of Lake Öljaren.
