  • Safari tents on a small farm on the edge of Gullringen
  • A 20-minute drive from Astrid Lindgren's World theme park
  • Natural swimming lake on site; cycle tracks close by
Flower-filled meadows, thick forests, clear lakes, colourful painted wooden barns – Småland Miniglamping’s Gotland surrounds are rather like something out of a kids’ picture book. And in fact you may well have seen them (or something like them…) in a kids’ book if you’ve ever read the works of Astrid Lindgren, who set the Pippi Longstocking stories here and is so beloved in these parts that there’s a theme park dedicated to her world 20 minutes’ drive from the site. Getting out to see the scenery’s a cinch – there are plenty of paths wending their way through the countryside, and a bike route that runs along an old railway track. Moose safaris might bright you eye to eye with some of the locals, or you can swoosh your way through the treetops at the adventure park 10 minutes’ drive away. And as no Swedish stay is complete without a dose of fika (coffee and cake), it’s handy to note that the site is just on the edge of the little town of Gullringen, 20 minutes' walk from a shop and a bakery. Fika takes preference over faffing with tent construction, of course, so Småland Miniglamping’s been set up with safari tents that are kitted out with everything you need for an easy break (private bathroom, beds, a dining table and a nifty mobile kitchen on wheels that allows you cook indoors or out in the open air). There’s a firepit area to warm mitts around on chilly days, and a swimming lake to cool off on sunny summer days.

Local attractions

That swimming lake looking a tad chilly for your sensibilities? Gullringen’s got an indoor swimming pool for a few warmer lengths. If you’d rather stay out in the fresh air, venture down to Vimmerby (20 minutes’ drive) for a game of golf, a canoe trip or an outing on horseback. There’s also an adventure park just outside the town (10 minutes), with high and low rope courses, plus Scandinavia’s longest zipline for the true daredevils. Feet planted firmly back at ground level, take a wildlife-spotting ride through the eight hectares of Virum Moose Park (45 minutes), or mount a special four-wheeler to pedal your way along the old railway track from Hultsfred (half an hour). There’s also a newer railway track here, where you can board train rides for an easier way to see the scenery. The fab Astrid Lindgren’s World theme park (20 minutes) is a must-visit for folk bringing the small sorts on hols – it’s packed with fairytale-style scenery to wander around, colourful characters to meet and a busy schedule of interactive shows and stories.
