  • Seafront Asturias glamping with access to Playa de Vidiago
  • Santander 15 minutes' drive; Picos de Europa National Park an hour
  • Spacious furnished tents with beds and bed linen; restaurant on site
Torn between a beach holiday or a mountain escape? How about a bit of both? At clifftop Kampaoh Llanes, on the north coast of Asturias, you’ll be less than five minutes’ walk from Playa de Vidiago – where the kids can go rockpooling and you can sunbathe or go surfing – and just about an hour’s drive from the mountainous landscapes of the Picos de Europa National Park. But that’s not all that beckons here, for the glampsite is only 15 minutes by car from the seaside town of Llanes, and from the museums, shops and award-winning restaurants of cosmopolitan Santander. So whether you’re looking to reconnect with nature or seek out a bit of city life (or both…) this place has got you covered. You'll be staying in the open air here, but with no need to bring or set up a tent. Accommodation is in spacious and well-designed tents all kitted out with beds, bed linen, hanging space for your clothes and electric sockets for charging your gadgets, among other handy bits and bobs. Life here centres around the sea, perhaps unsurprisingly… As well as being able to get down onto the beach easily, you can also settle at the site's viewpoint overlooking the cliffs – it's a particularly fine spot at sunset. There's also a restaurant/bar on site with lovely views out over the Cantabrian Sea, and a mini market for stocking up on beach snacks.

Local attractions

Wandering out onto the beach from the site is a great idea, of course – but there are several more beaches to seek out locally too. The unusual ‘inland beach’ Playa de Cobijeru (10 minutes’ drive) is worth a visit when the natural pool fills at high tide, and you may also like to head to pretty Playa de Puerto Chico (15 minutes) or Playa de Ballota (20 minutes). The coastline also has some nice walking trails with views out over the sea, and interesting spots like Cave Pindal (15 minutes), a grotto adorned with prehistoric cave paintings. Inland, there are all sorts of trails in the Picos de Europa National Park (an hour) – routes around the glacial Lakes of Covadonga (an hour and 15 minutes) are among the local favourites. Time for an urban stroll? You could take a wander around the seaside town of Llanes, exploring its medieval centre and looking for Los Cubos de Memoria, a colourful art installation, or head to Santander for the Centro Botin, the Palacio de la Magdalena and lots of tasty tapas. Both are 15 minutes' drive away.
