Dotted with Mediterranean palms, flowers and plants, luxurious SunLodge at Camping Vilanova Park sits on a hill with views over Vilanova i la Geltrú and the Mediterranean Sea. It’s between Barcelona and Tarragona in the Catalonian hills, and in less than 10 minutes’ drive, you can be on the beach. This is a really great spot for family holidays, as there’s always something happening on site. There are bouncy castles and play areas for kids, plus loads of sporting activities – from mini golf to football and tennis. The site’s entertainment team will organise stuff for younger kids to do, while teens can lounge around in the games or TV rooms. That frees you up to put your feet up on the sun terrace around the pool, chill in the indoor pool’s whirlpool or take an aerobics class. Better still, pop along to the terrace restaurant, shaded by mature trees – it’s a lovely spot to enjoy a glass of wine and listen to live music as you eat. At the end of an action-packed day, if you fancy supper chez vous, there’s a shop selling basics on site – and also a takeaway if you’re too relaxed to think about cooking. Other useful amenities include wifi (no sulky teenagers for you) well-maintained shower blocks and a launderette too.

Local attractions

For lazy days on the beach, head for Vilanova i la Geltrú (10 minutes' drive) or Segur de Calafell (15 minutes) or any of the little sandy pockets in between. Platja de Sant Gervasi beach (also 15 minutes) is a good bet for families as the water is calm and lifeguards are on duty in summer. A bus stops outside the campsite, taking you right into Barcelona (an hour’s ride). Souvenir shops on Las Ramblas, Gaudí’s vibrant Sagrada Família and the madcap Park Güell… they’ll keep you busy for hours. If you’re a football-mad family, the first stop has to be Camp Nou, FC Barcelona’s hallowed football stadium, which is open for guided tours. Tarragona (40 minutes) packs a punch with sightseers for its Roman ruins, seaside amphitheatre and towering cathedral – or maybe it’s straight on to PortAventura World (40 minutes) for a wild afternoon of fun on rollercoasters and water rides.
