  • On the banks of the Orange River, with spectacular mountain views
  • Fishing rod, canoe and kayak rental
  • Restaurant, bar, communal meals, braais and a herb and veg garden
There are some rivers that should be on one's bucket list wherever one plans to travel on the planet. And so it is with the stunning and spectacular Orange River, the longest in South Africa and meandering to Namibia and Botswana on its 2,200-kilometre run: the scenery, the sunsets and the watersports along here are of the variety best described as jaw dropping. If you now have the Orange River on your travel list, be most sensible indeed by staying right on its banks at The Growcery Camp, a fably handsome and eco-friendly place in the Richtersveld area and the Northern Cape. And as it's an easy 22 kilometres from the border of Namibia and South Africa, this is a mighty handy and popular stopover point too… sit back, settle down and bathe tired toes in the Orange River among a backdrop of the Namibian mountains. There's a huge amount to do either on site or in the immediate surroundings with the assistance of the amiable team: you can rent a canoe or kayak to set off out along the river; lounge in/around the river pool or bar; potter around the herb and vegetable garden to source fresh bits for your meals, or just have a chat with the team about booking adventure activities, hiking treks, rafting trips or excursions out on 4 x 4 safari. Fishing and rod rental are available too on a tag-and-release basis; please just be aware that the camp doesn't allow the use of live fish as bait. Eats are smashingly well sorted as well, with a restaurant serving meals all day, barbecue and lunch baskets for sale, regular communal dinners for all guests, and braai areas for guests' use. And the amenities? Also excellent, with toilets and showers, extensive recycling bins and ice pack freezing all at your riverside disposal. Tents, mattresses, sleeping bags, pillows and cooking utensils can be hired if needed.
