  • Simple site by a large baobab tree in the wilds of the Limpopo valley
  • Next to sandstone koppies with fig trees growing into the rocks
  • A 10-minute drive from Mapungubwe National Park
How do you like your wilderness in the mornings? If you want to breakfast by an ancient baobab tree that took root here before the first people arrived, you're in the right place. If you want to see elephants grazing feet away, gaze onto a sandstone landscape that's been catching the sun like this for a million years... same, so book a stay at Kaoxa Campsite. Nearby, follow in the steps of the San people and visit the Kaoxa caves, a short walk from the site and with the interiors of its dark rocky overhang painted with creatures you still see nearby today, like kudu, giraffe and mongoose. If wildlife is everywhere, so are the traces of the humans, from nomad bushmen to rich empires trading with India, and the main entrance of Mapungubwe National Park is 10 minutes' drive away. Facilities on site are well-kept and simple: washrooms with showers, and a traditional lapa shelter to provide shade for eating.

Local attractions

A 10-minute drive takes you to the main entrance of Mapungubwe National Park: you can take guided walks and game drives from here to see lions and leopards, eland and wildebeest, or plump for atmospheric sunset and after-dark excursions for a different take. Birders flock to the treetop walk to spot a mighty confluence of feathered wonders amid the canopies of the riverine forest. For a different confluence, hike along the Limpopo boardwalk to see the teeming life of the river as it splits and creates a natural trio of borders between South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. If beliefs leave traces like empires do, the Thathe Vondo Forest (three hours' drive) is where you find them. This forest of clouds and waterfalls is sacred to the Vondo people; it's worth it for the wildlife even if you don't spot the spirits said to dwell there. (Crocs certainly do, in the lake, so treat the wilderness with respect.)
