  • Family-friendly site in Dinokeng Big Five Game Reserve
  • An hour’s drive from Pretoria; an hour and a half to Jo’burg
  • Stargazers’ paradise: top spot for views of the clear night sky
Live out your African safari dreams, full of spectacular animals and personal feats of derring-do, at Thorn Tree Bush Camp, a family-friendly site 35 minutes’ drive from the small town of Hammanskraal in Gauteng. Thorn Tree is in Dinokeng Game Reserve, a Big Five reserve, so expect to spot elephants, buffalo, rhinos, lions and leopards – every guest gets a free two-hour guided game drive (whatever you do, do not leave your camera at home) or, if you’d prefer to feel the adventurer’s spirit take you, you can ditch the guide for a self-drive tour (just remember to buy the permit). After spending your day exploring the reserve, head back to site to continue living the Bushveld life: take a dip in the pool to cool off, then kick back next to your tent soaking up the tranquillity of nature while you listen to the roar of lions and the screeching of owls drifting across the bush. When it’s time for your dins, fire up the braai (pile it high with goodies from the supermarkets in Hammanskraal) or try out one of the restaurants nearby. After you’ve eaten your fill, put your feet up next to the boma and turn your eyes to the skies – this is a top spot for spectacular sunsets and stargazing.

Local attractions

There are some packages provided by the team at Thorn Tree Bush Camp that you might want to try out before you venture out into Dinokeng Game Reserve on your own. As well as that free guided game drive, there’s a guided bush walk (you might even spot some residents of the reserve that you’d usually miss from the vehicle) and night drives that will bring you face-to-face with some of the reserve’s more nocturnal animals. While the Big Five are, well, a big draw, there’s plenty else to do nearby if you’d had your fill of gentle giants and slinking cats. Start with scuba lessons and clay pigeon shooting less than five minutes from the site before heading further afield for hot air ballooning, microlight flights or brewery tours, all within 20 minutes’ drive of Thorn Tree. If your idea of prime game is more water-based, you can grab your rod and reel and head to Rust de Winter dam (35 minutes) for a spot of fishing, and if you’re craving more variety from your fauna, the Mystic Monkeys and Feathers Wildlife Park is half an hour away. The small town of Cullinan, 45 minutes from the site, is a must for abseiling, quads, horse riding, hiking and tours of the old diamond mines, but if you’re seeking a far more urban experience, set your sights on Pretoria (50 minutes) or Johannesburg (roughly an hour and a half).
