  • On the grounds of a historical sandstone school with mountain views
  • A 10-minute walk to Rhodes; a 50-minute drive to Tiffindell Ski Resort
  • Shop, restaurant and barbecue facilities on site; brewery nearby
Fan of rivers, valleys and mountains? Cross over to Rubicon Camping, deep in the Eastern Cape Highlands' Drakensberg range and at the foot of Naudesnek, South Africa’s highest pass. The park’s less than a 10-minute walk from the restored historical village of Rhodes, which edges the Bell River in truly lovely surrounds. Rubicon Camping sits on the spacious grassy grounds of an old sandstone school, leaving plenty of space for sprawling while checking out the views. The site’s amenities are all indoors, in a preserved historical building, and include barbecue facilities for braais; a shop is to hand too for picking up supplies. And if you can't be faffed sorting your own supper? A restaurant is on site for ease of eats. If you'd care to venture off site for foodie forages, a popular brewery serving food is less than 10 minutes' drive away… or a half an hour's walk if you’re planning on sampling the wares. Leisure options around the park include fly fishing for wild trout in the Bell River (permits can be picked up from the Wild Trout Association in the village), or you could simply set off on rambles of an unstructured sort in the surrounding lands. Birders might want to keep their binoculars to hand: more than 230 bird species have been recorded around Rhodes. If horse riding appeals a little more, local tour operators can take you out on a canter through the hills and grasslands. For a varied day out adventuring, you can tag river rafting and tubing onto the itinerary too…

Local attractions

Time your visit right and you could take part in one of Rhodes' big sporty events: the 52-kilometre Trail Run in mid-winter or the Mountain Bike Challenge in September. The cycling route runs for 82 kilometres towards Naude's Neck along the Lesotho border before passing the Tiffindell Ski Resort – your go-to spot for winter sports, a 50-minute drive from the site. It comes back to Rhodes through the spectacular Carlislehoekspruit Pass. Those not faint of heart can also head off on this journey at their own pace… or just book a trip in a 4x4 to see the same splendid scenery with their feet up. If you’re an intrepid trekker, there are also hikes to be had to the top of Ben Macdhui, the highest peak in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa at 3,001 metres. Fancy ticking another country off your list while you're in the area? The Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho is only 16 kilometres to the north of the site.
