  • Stunningly scenic hillside site on South Africa’s Wild Coast
  • Five minutes’ walk from a sandy beach; 10 minutes’ drive from town
  • Sundowner trips, guided excursions, bar, restaurant and music events
Fill your hols with music, hikes, boat trips and spectacular African sunsets with a stay at Amapondo Backpackers, a family-friendly site less than 10 minutes’ drive from the coastal town of Port St Johns on the Eastern Cape’s Wild Coast. On a terraced hill, with African jungle on all sides, views of the ocean will beckon immediately, luring guests down to the sandy shore five minutes’ walk away for seaside strolls and swims – but there’s plenty else hereabouts that’ll be added to the list almost immediately too. Active types might opt for one of the hikes operated by the site team: the Blow Hole and the Gap walk leads to secluded coastal spots (meeting a local hermit along the way), and stunning treks from Port St Johns to Coffee Bay, and up to the Isinuka Healing Springs to take the mud, come highly recommended. Might be wise to stick to seated excursions and activities instead though (there’s a horse riding tour to a local village that might appeal), as there’s quite a bit of clambering required to get around the site – feel those thighs burn while going to and from the restaurant, bar, braai and communal kitchen, then take a break with a game of pool or ping-pong, or at the bi-weekly poker games. Music buffs will be especially keen to spend time on site: there are regular evenings with DJs and live music, and well-timed stays will coincide with the site’s four-day trance festival – otherwise, have a quieter time with a sundowner trip to Mount Thesiger, where djembe music fills the air as beers are sipped on the cliff edge. Ah, bliss…

Local attractions

Slip off to the Silaka Nature Reserve five minutes’ drive away to spot dolphins out in the ocean or skirt the coast towards Port St Johns for the museum, Cape Hermes lighthouse and a whole host of restaurants serving South African grub (10 minutes). Once you’re done with eating your way through town, work on the swing at a nine-hole golf course or flex those muscles with kayaking on the Umzimvubu river; other watery activities like scuba diving, snorkelling and whale watching are also within 10 minutes of the park. If these types of aquatic attractions feel like too much effort, slosh around in the mud or pink-water pool at Isinuka Healing Springs before unwinding further at Mount Thesiger, a disused airstrip with stunning ocean views and sunsets, both 20 minutes’ drive away.
