  • Private game reserve 15 minutes' drive from the N2 Garden Route
  • Half an hour's drive from the beach and watersports at Jeffreys Bay
  • Pool, bar, braai area and organised excursions on site
Guided hikes, game drives, birdwatching, canoe trips, fishing expeditions… and all without budging from your bush camp to sort the details. One of the perks of a stay at Pabala Private Nature Reserve is a friendly team on site that can organise all sorts of outings for guests. It helps, of course, that the Eastern Cape campground is in a prime position for such escapades, within a large private reserve for bush-type activities and half an hour’s drive from the coast for sea-based outings. If you’d like to roam under your own steam you may like to consider beach days and watersports at Jeffreys Bay or taking to the trails of the Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve… but however you choose to spend your days, it’s all surely worth the 15-minute detour off the N2 (aka the Garden Route). Jam-packed days can be followed up with a bit of idle time back at base, taking a dip in the outdoor pool or just settling in a camp chair to take in the splendid views while the jackals chat among themselves (sit still for long enough and you may just be the one to claim a rare spotting of a shy bushbuck). Evenings are all about the braai and the bar – pick up your cooking supplies in Loerieheuwel (10 minutes’ drive) for the outdoor grills provided, and gather with fellow guests at the central boma for beers from the bar. If you’re staying up late, sidle over to the communal firepit to ensure no chills set in.

Local attractions

Start your bush adventure by checking out the range of outings available at the reserve – have a chat with staff to sort hikes, kayak outings (sociable or strenuous depending on your appetite for activity), birdwatching and safari drives, and special sunset drives with sparkling wine for those who’ve come over all romantic. Fancy a bit of fishing? The folk here can also organise freshwater fishing at the Gamtoos river, surf fishing or deep sea charters. If you’d prefer to laze on the beach, there are very fine stretches of sand in Jeffreys Bay and Gamtoos Mouth (both around half an hour away by car). Surf lessons, sandboarding, beachy horse rides and scuba diving can all be had in Jeffreys Bay, and you may also like to stop in at the shell museum or take a tour of the Brewhaha Brewery. If the wildlife didn’t come out to pose for your pics at the reserve, you should have better luck at African Dawn (20 minutes), a wildlife sanctuary whose breeding programme ensures it’s always got resident endangered big cats and birds to see.
