  • Peaceful, rural site in the Kouga Mountains and Baviaanskloof reserve
  • A 55-minute drive from Joubertina; woodland walks straight from site
  • Stone swimming pool, pub and dining room, meals and drinks available
If you’re after a peaceful trip in the South African wilderness, escape from the world for a little while at Baviaans Lodge. This site set among a valley of wild olive, white stinkwood and yellowwood trees is a scenic place for a serene stint in the Kouga Mountains and Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve, a protected area in the Eastern Cape Province. And while you might want to spend days hiding away in the main lodge’s stone-built country pub with a glass of local wine or out on the verandah gazing at the views, your sense of adventure might think differently once it hears about all the activities to choose from: there are 4x4 trail experiences in the hills and river rafting (book in advance) through gorges, as well as walks and hikes to be had along trails with the hopes of spotting game. When tired out from seeing all the lush landscapes – and perhaps an animal or two – a meal prepped in the farmhouse kitchen and served in the dining room is sure to be welcome. Or perhaps you’ll be wanting a breather out in the fruit tree orchard post-braai with a page-turner from the little library while the rest of the family swim in the stone-clad outdoor pool? As Baviaans has no electricity or mobile phone reception, you could also sit down beside the fireplace or next to the paraffin lamps under the yellowwood beamed ceilings and run through the memories of the day… Alternatively, finish off an evening with your head turned to the often-clear skies in this setting that’s free from light pollution while stargazing using the Celestron telescope set in its own observatory on site.

Route directions

Follow these directions rather than Google Maps: Take the R62 from Kareedouw towards Humansdorp. Two kilometres along the R62 on the left, exit at the Assegaaibosch Station sign. Cross the low-level bridge and go left at the T-junction. Keep left then cross the mountain pass. In approximately 20 minutes at a T-junction go left again. After 20 minutes cross the Kouga River Poort. Two kilometres further on take the left exit marked Baviaans Lodge then exit left again. The lodge is a further 22 kilometres from this point along the road, approximately 45 minutes. Don’t take any small side turn-offs. You may come across a closed gate for farm livestock enroute but just pass through. Emergency/wifi connection no: 021 8135883.

Local attractions

There really is simply tons to do at this park: think swimming in clear rockpools out in ravines, fishing for bass and carp on the Kouga and Baviaanskloof rivers, and mountain biking across tricky terrain. You can also birdwatch in the forest near the lodge – at least 130 species have been recorded here among the 100 tree types. If you’re into your botany, wander off searching for various types of plants: seven of South Africa’s eight biomes are said to thrive in this wild area... Rather swot up on the heritage of the humans who called the setting their home? If so, trails tracing the old Saan tribe’s rock art can be sought as well.
