  • Family resort in Colchester with stunning views of the Sundays River
  • Less than 10 minutes' drive from the entrance to Addo Elephant Park
  • Cruises, canoeing and fishing trips organised from the site
All sorts of Eastern Cape escapades are possible for those staying at Pearson Park Resort, a family resort on the banks of the Sundays River in the small town of Colchester. That river frontage doesn’t just provide some splendid scenery for time spent at the park, it’s also a most handy feature for those looking to get out and about – canoeing, sandboarding and angling trips can be organised from here, and site staff can also sort sunrise or sunset river cruises. Meanwhile, birdwatching and fishing are popular picks with those who’d like just a little bit of activity while they chill out on the riverbank. For sandy strolls, simply cross the river (by canoe or ferry) to hit Colchester’s great swathe of sandy beach, which has several kilometres of dunes and fine sand to wander around. All this and elephants too? Yup – the Matyholweni entrance to the Addo Elephant Park is a mere three kilometres away, and a safari centre is just across the road for straightforward sorting of trips to see the big beasts. In between all this excitement, there’s plenty of space and shade to relax in on site, with an outdoor pool and play area to cater for those who’ve still got a bit of energy left. A licensed restaurant and fully-stocked supermarket are just next door to make it easy to organise eats. This is the sort of place where you’ll probably want to stick around for a while, but when it does come time to move on it’s handy to note the proximity of the R2 for smooth onward journeys.

Local attractions

This resort makes a fine pick for folk in search of active times: sandboarding and quad bike outings can be organised within a few minutes’ walk, as can paddles along the Nukakamma Canoe Trail (or shorter outings for those who’d just prefer a taster of the local scenery). And it’s also an excellent spot for accessing animal antics: the Addo Elephant Park (10 minutes’ drive) is a must, of course, but if you’re sticking around for a while you may also like to sort trips to see the Big Five at Kwantu Game Reserve (40 minutes), meet the residents of the Addo Raptor & Reptile Centre (half an hour) or head out to sea on whale-watching expeditions from Bluewater Bay (20 minutes). There are plenty of gorgeous beaches and rural trails to take in around here too, but if you fancy swapping all of that for a bit of urban time, it’s a half-hour drive to Port Elizabeth for art galleries, the seafront Fort Frederick and a history-tinged wander on the Donkin Heritage Trail.
