  • Rural camping a few minutes' stroll from a spectacular sandy beach
  • Access the famed Alexandria Trail straight from the grounds
  • Bar, restaurant, braai facilities and two pools
The Woody Cape Backpackers and Nature Lodge team describe this site's setting as a piece of paradise. And how: this spectacular South African site is on the coast of the Eastern Cape, a few minutes' gentle stroll from a stunning golden beach that makes up part of the 50 kilometres of the Alexandria dune field, the biggest active dune field on the planet. Spend long long hot days at the sands here, idling on the beach or on the splendid dunes surrounding the site, or use Woody Cape as a base for the famed two-day Alexandria Trail accessible straight from the grounds. The team can also arrange tours around the Addo Elephant National Park, canoe trips, horse riding and overnight hikes on the dunes. As it's South Africa, you'll be within easy day trip distance of wildlife parks and reserves too: that Addo Elephant National Park is an hour's drive west, and the Kikiyu and Kariega game reserves are 35 and 45 minutes east. Heading north west, the Amakhala Game Reserve is within 55 minutes. Woody Cape has two pools for dips and days around the grounds, volleyball for active hours, and free fishing from the site's own private stretch of beach. There are braai facilities if you're sizzling up your own supper (sort supplies at the nearest town, Alexandria, 20 minutes' drive north); if you can't be faffed with any of that, saunter over to the restaurant and bar for home-cooked eats with cold drinks; takeaways are available too. Woody Cape has toilets, showers, internet access and bike rental.

Local attractions

Woody Cape is in a remote wildlife haven, surrounded by Alexandria's forest and dunes and a top pick in the region for hiking, horse riding, and wildlife watching and photography around the nearby reserves. Heading east to South Africa's Sunshine Coast, the seaside town of Kenton-on-Sea (40 minutes' drive) is a popular holiday spot for its beaches, hills and the shoreside Ghio Wetland Nature Reserve. The resort is between the Bushman and Kariega rivers for canoeing, kayaking and boat cruises; ask the Woody Cape team to help you arrange your watery trip. Westwards, drive an hour and 20 minutes to reach Port Elizabeth or PE, one of South Africa's biggest cities and on the end of the scenic Garden Route along the Cape coast. There are more beaches to lounge on here (try King's beach or Hobie), St George's Park to stroll through, and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum for cultural days. Book a boat trip to spot humpback whales if you're around PE between June and August or November and January, leaving from Algoa Bay.
