  • Garden-filled 21-hectare site just off the Friendly N6 Route
  • A 10-minute drive from Aliwal North and two hours from Bloemfontein
  • Retro-style diner on site for breakfasts, meals and drinks
Veer just off the Friendly N6 Route for a good-natured welcome from At The Nest’s affable staff when road-tripping around South Africa. This centrally set park is a stellar spot for a stopover – it’s conveniently located 10 minutes’ drive from Aliwal North, just where Free State meets Eastern Cape on the border formed by the Orange River. Shops, restaurants and other town amenities are a short drive away in the town centre, but the scenic rural landscape around the site gives it the vibe of somewhere rather more remote: it’s spread over 21 hectares of open space, much of which is filled with well-kept gardens. Look out for abundant birdlife in the trees, chill out on the lawn, take a wander around the grounds or pick a spot to watch the sunset… all are fine ways to spend a stint at this laidback place. Equally generously sized are the pitch fields, where there’s oodles of space for kids to play. A braai is of course a must, and facilities are provided to set those up, but it’s also worth allocating some eating and drinking time to the site’s splendid retro diner, which serves up breakfasts, burgers, steaks and milkshakes in old-school surrounds.

Local attractions

Aliwal North has a handful of attractions to keep you occupied, including a museum made up of a 19th-century library and the Old Dutch Reformed Church (five minutes’ drive). It also edges the North Golf Club – one of the best nine-hole courses in South Africa (10 minutes) – and has hot springs for rounding off sessions on the green with relaxing dips. Next, linger around Lady Grey, another of the area's top towns, for wild swims in the dam’s rockpool (45 minutes); this Victorian-style settlement is circled by the Witteberg Mountains, near the third-highest pass in South Africa, so it’s also a hotspot for hiking. Hightail it to the Historical Smithfield Cemetery (50 minutes) afterwards, home to war graves and the final resting place of key local figures, then continue poking around the country’s past at the Pellissier House Museum (an hour), one of the Free State’s oldest buildings. Mix things up with a visit to the Oviston Nature Reserve (an hour), a 16,000-hectare protected area on the Gariep Dam’s southern side, with plains game including ostriches, springbok, oryx and zebras to catch a glimpse of.
