  • Peaceful off-grid farm 45 minutes' drive from Bloemfontein
  • Hiking trails on site; game drives available on local farm
  • Freshwater dam for swims, campfire area and telescope for stargazing
Peace, quiet, nature… 234 hectares of it, and an easily doable 45-minute drive from the centre of Bloemfontein. Sound like a cracking escape from the city? Then wend your way up to Free State’s The Farm Windhoek for a real restful rural vibe. It may be only a short hop from one of the country’s largest cities, but the farm’s secluded setting means that it’s all about the trappings of nature: views, fresh air and quiet (bordering on proper silence at times, say the folk here). The bulk of the farm is made up of grassland for cattle to graze, but there are often other seasonal visitors in residence too – springbok, warthogs, jackals, and the like on land, and a cluster of waterbirds on the dam (don’t forget the binoculars if you’d like a closer look). Peace being so central to the farm, there’s little in the way of machinery in use, and no electrical supply for the pitches. The team suggests turning attentions away from modern gadgetry and instead heading out for a hike, taking a swim in the freshwater dam, gathering by the campfire or using the telescope to gaze up at the starry skies. They won’t leave you stranded if you do need dealings with the outside world though – there's a wifi hotspot and solar power for charging. With laptops and the like safely stashed away, there are other entertainment options – the old farmhouse has a stack of retro magazines and books to browse, a collection of records to play on the old radiogram, board games, puzzles, musical instruments… you might even forget the very existence of your smartphone…

Local attractions

The focus of a stay here is mainly to make the most of your immediate surrounds – there’s plenty of space around the farm for such things as flying kites and model aircraft, or taking walks on the two marked hiking trails. To get to the further reaches of the farm, have a chat with the staff for details of extra (payable) activities they can sort, including horse riding, tractor tours and game drives on a neighbouring farm. If you’re after a bit of time to ease back into city life (or haven’t visited the place before), a 45-minute drive will take you into Bloemfontein for strolls at Loch Logan Waterfront, a bit of history at Naval Hill and the Anglo-Boer War Museum and local photos and paintings at Oliewenhuis Art Museum. The city’s orchid house and Zanchieta Wild Cat Farm (an hour’s drive from the farm) are worth a stop if you’d rather stay focused on the natural world.
