  • Basic off-grid campsite in forest on the border of Italy and Slovenia
  • Half an hour’s drive to Sistiana Beach and the clifftop Rilke Trail
  • Solar-powered pitches with filtered rainwater and a playground
If you’re looking to camp way off well-trodden tourist routes, here’s a chance to dodge the crowds and base yourself in peaceful Slovenian countryside. Deep Forest, near Komen and Sezana, is a very basic camping site – providing pitches, water and electricity only – in the middle of a forest wilderness on the Slovenian border with Italy. Here you can kick back amid rural solitude, yet be on the Gulf of Trieste coast at Sistiana within half an hour’s drive or a 45-minute bike ride. And if you’d rather not stray too far from your pitch, there’s a small playground to keep younger kids busy and plenty of stuff to do round and about. The whole region is dotted with limestone caves to explore, and neighbouring vineyards are open for tours and tastings. For more sporty days out, walk your dog, jog, cycle or horse ride along forest trails, keeping an eye out for deer and wild boar – and on the subject of wildlife, sometimes in the evening you may hear wolves calling in the distance. The pitches have their own filtered rain-water supply and are powered by solar electricity. Just a note of caution: access to Deep Forest is via two gravel tracks leading to Deep Forest so it's best to travel here in a four wheel drive.

Local attractions

If you fancy an adults-only day out by the sea, Portopiccolo (half an hour’s drive) has a shingle strip with a lido and swimming pool, plus a pretty marina to potter around and lots of waterfront bars to while away leisurely evenings. You can also taste wines produced at vineyards near the campsite, or enjoy regional specialities like prosciutto and dumplings at simple 'osmica' restaurants. Kids in tow? Let them burn off energy on hikes, bike rides or pony trekking through rugged Karst Plateau landscapes, or join them for a day messing about on the treetop rope courses and zipwires at Trieste Adventure Park. Mix a bit of history into your family adventures by hiking the clifftop Rilke Trail (half an hour) past limestone caves used as bunkers and hideouts in World War II to 14th-century Duino Castle (25 minutes), which is open for tours of antique-filled apartments. And after all that, spoil them with a trip to the beach at Sistiana (half an hour) with play areas, sun lounger hire and watersports including snorkelling and boat hire.
