Guests bed down beneath the shadow of 100-year-old trees on green terraces supported by local stone walls at the cracking Kamp David. The owners call the park 'a small paradise', and when you’re here among the fresh air of the Vipava Valley watching birds flit from branch to branch, it’s difficult to disagree with such a sentiment… The team hasn’t done much to tame the nature on site except for trimming back excess bushes and stacking stones on the retaining walls as per the area’s traditions, so the whole place has a wild vibe yet feels well cared for thanks to its up-to-date facilities. And what may these be? Well, there’s the modern, regularly cleaned washroom amenities and a reception selling coffee, soft drinks and ice cream. Fresh bread and other baked goods are delivered to the park every day, so breakfast and lunchtime sandwiches are a doddle to whip up. Sitting just outside Malovše, a 20-minute walk from Selo and set among the Vipava Valley’s hills and vineyards, the site is 300 metres from the H4 motorway and in a prime position for practising all sorts of pursuits, from hiking and cycling to paragliding and climbing… you name it, they’ve got it (just ask at reception about organising tours or hiring bikes). And for rest days? Settle in on a grassy pitch, sensibly set in an old oak grove that offers shelter on windy days and natural shade when it’s warmer.

The Vipava Valley is a wonderland for walking and biking, so grab your boots (or rent a bike from site) and get going. You could also give organised expeditions like paragliding, fishing and horse riding a go if you’d prefer to get to grips with the gorgeous landscape using alternative methods. Heart set on subterranean explores? Bound over to Postojna, the biggest cave in the Karst region (35 minutes' drive), and take a miniature train through its labyrinthine network of tunnels, eyeing up massive stalactites and stalagmites as you ride. Swing by Predjama Castle (35 minutes) on the way home, an impressive Renaissance structure built in the mouth of another cave. Fine with going further during your adventures? The tiny capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana (an hour), is doable on a day trip if you fancy touring Tivoli Gardens and the central market. And if you feel like having a foray to another country? The border with Italy is 20 minutes’ drive.
