  • Small luxury site on south-west Portugal's Atlantic coast
  • A 15-minute drive from surfing and walks in the Alentejo Natural Park
  • Private showers and shared indoor kitchen; bars five minutes by car
Up for wilderness walks, wildlife spotting and surfing on the south-western tip of Europe? Quintal Yurts have a tip-top spot in Portugal’s Beja region, a 10-minute drive from the Atlantic Ocean. There’s a lot to do on this cracking coast, which is why Sarah and Phil, the friendly team behind Quintal Yurts, have worked hard to ensure maximum comfort back at base. The comfy interiors are cool in the summer months, cosy when Atlantic winds blow. Outside, in a secluded courtyard, you and your tribe have access to your own shower room and a shared eco-friendly toilet. Mealtimes, not to mention snack-times, sundowner-times and picnic-preparing, are cinch thanks to the well-equipped communal kitchen and dining area, with barbecue and outside terraces for alfresco feasting. Sarah and Phil lay on a continental breakfast if you book it in advance and similar advice goes for furry fellow travellers: pets are welcome by prior arrangement. It’s a supremely peaceful spot up there on the south-western edge of Europe: as the sun sets you’ll often only hear the birds and the frog chorus. That said, you’re a five-minute drive from bars and eats in Cavaleiro and a quarter of an hour from the seaside village of Zambujeira do Mar and its beach.

Local attractions

The South West Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park has a reputation as Europe’s finest stretch of coastline, and you’re slap-bang in the middle of it. Surfers flock to the beaches round here to ride the Atlantic waves; try Almograve, Praja das Furnas or Vila Nova da Milfonte, 15, 20 and 25 minutes away. The latter town is also handy if you fancy horse-trekking or canoeing and cruises down the Mira river (well-supplied with supermarkets, too). Take a break from riding waves and soaking up rays to explore the wildlife: head a quarter of an hour to Cabo Sardoa, whose cliffs are one of the only places you’ll see nesting storks. The region is also home to rare sea-going otters and fishing eagles, so bring your binoculars. It’s not all cliffs and ocean: an insider tip from the owners is to drive half an hour to Pego da Pias, a pristine wilderness of lagoons formed as the Mira tumbles from rocky cliffs above, ideal for dips, picnics and walks around (watch out for wild boar). If you fancy a hit of local (and global) history, Sines (50 minutes) has a fine old medieval fortress with a museum and while the industrial port isn't pretty it's a fitting birthplace for nautical explorer Vasco da Gama. Roman ruins at Santiago do Cacem, an hour away, have the added plus of a safari park and a sandy beach to keep everyone smiling.
