  • Peaceful working ranch in the Namibian bush
  • A 45-minute drive from Omaruru and 90 minutes from Otjiwarongo
  • Swimming pool, home-cooked meals, sundowner tours and guided hikes
Can’t stop talking about calming hols full of scenic excursions, fab sunsets and lots and lots of local eats? Quit parroting on and make tracks for Farm Rüppell, a family-friendly site in the Erongo region, 45 minutes’ drive from the city of Omaruru. Those in need of a soothing getaway should make a beeline for this working ranch owned and operated by the Van Rensburg family, who simply want to share the beauty, wildlife and peace of this part of Namibia. And peaceful it is indeed… Spend afternoons lazing about in the African sun, breathing in fresh, clean air while gazing out over the koppies (small hills) that dot the landscape, then take a dip in the pool when it’s time to cool off. Need a little more activity? Talk to the site team, who’ll arrange outings (like sundowner drives or guided walks) based on guests’ personal tastes. After days of adventure, pull up a chair in the dining room and sample some of the traditional home-cooked Namibian fare from the kitchen (cooked fresh with homemade produce), then retire to the verandah with a beer or wine in hand... to catch as many of those famed African sunsets as possible and to listen to the jackals calling into the night.

Local attractions

Start explores hereabouts with a jaunt into the small city of Omaruru, 45 minutes’ drive from base, where there are craft shops, restaurants and markets, and a handful of wineries serving up the real tastes of Namibia. Not enough city time? Trek onwards to Otjiwarongo (an hour and 20 minutes away) to visit the Crocodile Ranch, see the 1912 German mining train and get a feel for local life on a township tour. This part of Namibia is also home to the Ju/’hoansi San people, and visits to the Omandumba living museum come highly recommended for learning more about their culture and heritage. The scenic spot also has plenty of rock art to view, as well as a farm where kudu, springbok, jackals, cheetahs and leopards can be hunted. Zoologists may prefer to eschew the hunt, travelling instead to the Tsibeb Conservancy wildlife area; this should also be a major draw for hikers, as it’s home to Namibia’s highest mountain, Mount Brandberg. There’s loads more within about two hours to entice animal fans too: the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Otjiwarongo and Okonjima Nature Reserve’s AfriCat each give visitors the chance to get up close with the fastest land animal in the world. Need an urban day? Namibia’s capital city Windhoek is a must-visit for its museums, vineyards, markets and gardens.
