  • Spacious and shaded site on the shore of spectacular Lake Ohrid
  • Within easy cycling distance of the UNESCO-listed city of Ohrid
  • Restaurant serving Macedonian dishes, fish, meat, grills and pizza
If you haven't been to the Republic of Macedonia's Lake Ohrid yet, you need to get there with immediacy. (And if you have, you need to get there again… and then another time or two after that.) For this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a stunning spot making up the deepest lake in the Balkans, in a jaw-droppingly spectacular setting among the mountainous border between Macedonia and eastern Albania. Fishing villages are on the lakeside in both countries, along with waterside landscapes of wetlands and reed beds home to hundreds of thousands of migrating and rare birds. And then there's the lakeside city of Ohrid: also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, also stunning, and within cycling distance of Camperstop KJ Divono, a spacious and scenic site minute from the water on Lake Ohrid's north-eastern side. Sensible sorts should spend most of their Macedonian time on the section of beach adjoining KJ Divono, or getting out onto and in the water kayaking, sailing and swimming. Elsewhere, there's stacks of scenic and shaded grassy space around the site for strolls and general idling… perhaps long into the evening against a spectacular Lake Ohrid sunset… Much time should also be spent at the KJ Divono restaurant, for lazy times sampling local meat, fish and grills, regional dishes and pizzas… perhaps long into the evening against a spectacular Lake Ohrid sunset too…?

Fully-serviced grass touring pitch

Liked: Beautiful location. Wonderful scenery. Local town has wonderful restaurants with friendly staff.

Disliked: Not enough showers or toilets. Showers that were there only gave luke warm water and not very powerful. The shower heads were poor quality and brackets did not allow the water to be directed accurately. The site did not have clear makings of pitches and the trees were overgrown.

Liked: The campsite is in a beautiful location overlooking Lake Ohrid. The on-site restaurant is nice and serves local food. The staff were helpful and informative.

Disliked: The campsite feels quite chaotic as the pitches are not marked out and one day we had a caravan parked so close we couldn’t even get chairs out to sit by our van. There is only one male and female shower for the whole site. This is not sufficient for the number of people there. There is also only one washing machine for the whole site which we had to wait for quite a while to use.

Local attractions

To the beach… and then to the lake, for paddles and swims as well as more active options such as sailing (boats and lessons are both available). After that, adventurers should take to two wheels and pedal the coastway path or purpose-built bike path to Ohrid city, the biggest of the three on the lake's shores. Ohrid's been nicknamed the Jerusalem of the Balkans for its huge number of churches and its status as a holy centre of the region. Among the remaining ones to see are the Church of St. Sophia, one of the best-known sights of Macedonia, and the Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon, possibly built by Saint Clement. Archaeology aficionados should also take a look at the Ancient Theatre of Ohrid, built around 200BC, and the archaeological and cultural museum at Robevi House, with exhibits over three floors. The other city on Lake Ohrid's Macedonian side, Struga, is 30 minutes' drive from the site; the lake's Albanian city of Pogradec is about an hour away.
