Johnny Cash may not have been crooning about meeting a man in Camping Rino in the well-known tune, but this site in the village of Kališta is still worth making a song and dance about; it’s metres from the shore of Lake Ohrid and less than a 10-minute drive from the pretty town of Struga, with a private sandy beach and pitches facing a scenic stretch of water... Roll up at the park, pick a place to settle in, then toast to the start of a happy hol: guests get given free coffee, tea or raki on arrival (and caffeine flows freely each morning as well). For eats, a bar and restaurant with a terrace is on site and a couple of Macedonian restaurants are in Kališta; travel the 10 minutes to Struga for more choice. Lake Ohrid sits smack bang in the middle of the Macedonian and Albanian borders, with much to see in the stunning surrounds. The family-run site’s owners can get you up to speed on what to do – whether you fancy organised tours around the lake or hikes in National Park Galichica (an hour and 25 minutes away) – as these wise owls have more than 15 years’ experience in the tourist industry. Ask them about boat rental – travellers can zoom across the water to towns like Pestani and the famed Ohrid if they don't fancy the drive. Guests needn’t go far for leisure though: swims are to be had straight from the site, and trawling for trout can be done from the park's rowing boat. Small fry are sorted too, with spacious, grassy grounds to run amok in.

Local attractions

When settling in Struga for a stint, there’s oodles to do: start with a 20-minute stroll to the Monastery of Kalishta – lovely lakeside views the whole way, natch – which started as a cave church in the 14th or 15th century and was later developed into the Orthodox religious complex is it today. Next, take the 10-minute drive to Struga town for the taxidermy and archaeological artefacts at Dr Nikola Nezlobinski Museum, the Ottoman-era Halveti Teke monastery and the stalls at the Old Bazaar. Souvenir shopping sorted, circle around the lake to the east and land in Ohrid town, 25 minutes away, for the First Bulgarian Empire’s Samoil’s Fortress and the remains of a Greek amphitheatre from even further back in time. Perhaps the most famed spot here – or at least the most photographed – is the Church of St John at Kaneo, a 30-minute drive, whose ancient pinkish-red bricks sit on a cliff contrasting with the lake in the background.
