  • Peaceful site by a creek a kilometre from Fouhren
  • Five kilometres from Vianden
  • Playground, table tennis, football field, kids' club and restaurant
It's only a kilometre from town, but peace, quiet and a relaxed rural vibe are on offer for all at Luxembourg's Camping Walsdorf, surrounded by woods and fields among the scenic hills of the Luxembourg Ardennes. This is a place for pottering and pedalling, with several hiking and biking routes starting from the site and top trails along the banks of the Our river from Vianden five miles away. A 15-kilometre drive or cycle brings you to Müllerthal or Little Switzerland and its 40 or so trails around waterfalls, rock formations and river crossings. (The hardy can also see the area from way up high via a balloon flight a kilometre away.) Camping Walsdorf is between Diekirch and Vianden, a kilometre from the small town of Fouhren. It's a lively family site in summer, running a programme of activities and entertainment alongside its year-round leisure facilities of a football/volleyball field, table tennis and a playground. A creek runs through the site for paddling and nature spotting. Walsdorf also has a restaurant serving full meals and snacks, and a mini market selling groceries, Dutch produce, fresh bread and daily sandwiches. The restaurant has free wifi.

Local attractions

Hiking, Nordic walking and mountain bike trails leave from the site for those who prefer to ditch the car and stay close to base, or there's hot air ballooning a kilometre away at Fouhren if you want to be geographically close but way high up. You can fish on Vianden Reservoir, four kilometres away, between the beginning of April and the end of September (a permit is mandatory, so buy a two-week licence at the Vianden tourist office on Rue du Vieux Marché from 1 June). Vianden's a popular Luxembourg tourist destination: you'll easily see Vianden Castle, on the hill above the town and reachable by the Télésiège chair lift. The lift will leave you at a restaurant even higher than the castle to walk down 15 or so minutes through the forest; in summer, the less energetic or less mobile can take the tourist train to the castle from the town centre. Within walking distance of the castle, the Indian Forest Adventure Park can also be reached by taking the Télésiège and walking a bit downhill. It provides climbing escapades on 60 different climbing routes and courses of varying difficulty for beginner climbers and the more experienced. For day trips, have gentle walks in the Müllerthal area, 15 kilometres away, or wander around the abbey, gardens and museums in Echternach, 20 kilometres away.
