  • Stay at a working farm and vineyard 45 minutes from Florence
  • Wine tastings and tours on site
  • Buy wine and olive oil directly from the farm
There won’t be any sour grapes with a stay at Tuscany's Montaioncino estate, a working farm and vineyard 45 minutes’ drive from Florence. Montaioncino may be a haven for agritourism, but that doesn’t mean guests will be cut off from the world: it’s five minutes from the village of Pozzale and 10 minutes from the train station in Empoli. This is wine country, so there’s no shortage of vineyards, estates and cellars within easy reach. The closest is Tenuta Forconi, a 10-minute drive from Montaioncino, but you don’t even have to leave the site to get the taste of Tuscany on your tongue: wine tastings and vineyard tours are available for guests, bringing them on the journey from vine to wine. There's also food available on site, so after your aperitif you can then settle down for dinner, looking out over the vineyard and olive groves to the mountains in the distance. And before you leave? Make sure to get yourself a souvenir: pick up some of the wine or olive oil made on site.

Liked: Beautiful location. Good facilities and the lovely farmer’s wife insisted on driving us to the train station for our visit to Florence. In the evening she made dinner and served wine made on the farm.

Liked: Locatie, staanplaats, ongelofelijk uitzicht. Vriendelijke ontvangst wel alleen in Italiaans maar de gastvrouw deed haar best. (Google translate heeft me goed geholpen:) ) Heerlijke wijnproeverij en lekker eten.

Disliked: Netheid van de douches.

Liked: Montaioncino is a truly authentic Tuscan experience, spearheaded by Nonna Daniela! It’s rustic, relaxed and great value. Facilities are basic, but Daniela and her family have an olive grove and vineyard from which they make their extra virgin olive oil and multiple wines. All of which are available to try and buy (at very reasonable prices). The best of all was that you can have your evening meals for €20 which includes (bread, prosciutto , a main course and three glasses of the vineyards wine). For a little extra you can have Nonna’s tiramisu as well! The view over the vineyard as the sun sets in the evening is unbelievable! The site is a short drive from Empoli station where you can get the train into Florence for €5. The car park there has CCTV and is €6 for the full day! We would highly recommend a trip to Montaioncino!

Liked: Spent one night there. A small, friendly and generally very quiet site with great views, secluded pitches and modern washing facilities. I'd go there again for a longer time.

Disliked: Campers returning in noisy mobile homes after we started to sleep. The site should have a gate to stop returns after a certain time.

Local attractions

Florence, a 45-minute drive from Montaoincino, is one of the main centres of history and the arts in Italy, a reputation cultivated since the days of the Medici family. A visit to the Uffizi Gallery will bring you face to face with some of the most famous artworks of the Renaissance and, a five-minute walk from the Uffizi, the Accademia houses one of Michelangelo’s most famed works, the statue of David. Florence is one of the most photographed cities in the world and one of its most photographed sights is the Ponte Vecchio, a covered bridge that spans the river Arno. Ponte Vecchio is also a top spot for shopping, as jewellers line it from end to end. Nearer to hand is the town of Vinci, a 25-minute drive from Montaoincino. The birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci is now home to the Museo Leonardiano, a museum dedicated to the polymath’s life and his works of science and engineering. Away from the museums and art galleries, get some fresh air into your lungs with a guided cycle tour of the Tuscan countryside operated by Toscana by Bike, a 15-minute drive from the site. In typical Tuscan fashion, your tour will end with a wine tasting…
