Italy's Varano Island is very viewsome. A nature haven between lake and sea, it's the isthmus that separates the Adriatic Sea from Varano Lake (the biggest lake in southern Italy and the biggest coastal lake in the land) and is home to the herons, flamingos, ducks and cormorants of the State Natural Reserve of the Island Varano as well as a 10km run of sandy beach. A short walk from a serviced beach on the island is family-friendly Varantur Holiday Village, set four kilometres from the Foggia town of Rodi Garganico – we think you'll find that the fish restaurants and promontory here are very viewsome/picworthy too. The holiday village has direct access to the beach 300 metres away and you'll be able to hire beach umbrellas, sun loungers and deckchairs once you're on the sands. Varantur Holiday Village has a large playground, an outdoor pool and a paddling pool, and sports facilities such as a tennis court, a pétanque court, a football pitch and a ping pong table. If you don't fancy a Foggia foodie trip to Rodi Garganico, a restaurant, bar and grocery store are all to hand on site. Throughout the season the team organises entertainment activities and sports tournaments for all the family; getting off site, free transfer to and from the nearest train station is available from 9am to 7pm.

Local attractions

Puglia's Gargano Promontory is a firm fave with foodies, beach baskers and wildlife watchers, and Varantur Holiday Village is a short drive from some of the region's most popular medieval towns, more beaches and hiking, cycling and nature spotting at the Gargano National Park – we suggest days out at all. The promontory's highest point, 840 metres above the sea, is at Monte Sant' Angelo, a town on the southern slopes of Monte Gargano with a small history centre, tenth century castle and thirteenth century frescoes in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The town of Rodi Garganico is another much recommended and popular Puglia place: head here for the harbour, several beaches and those fish restaurants we mentioned; from here take a hydrofoil to the heavenly Tremiti Islands: you'll want to snap many a photo here too. More fishy and seafood highlights are at the seaside resorts of Peschici; also visit the medieval centre, castle ruins and restaurants of Vico Garganico village, and the pilgrimage site and museum of the Shrine of Padre Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo.
