  • On the Puglian coast, an easy stroll from sandy Mediterranean beaches
  • Zoo, theme park, cities and waterpark within half an hour’s drive
  • Restaurant-pizzeria, supermarket, butcher and greengrocer all on site
Pack your water kit and swim along to the family-friendly Camping Costa Merlata, 20 minutes’ drive from the Puglian city of Ostuni, for lazy and hazy sandy days on the Mediterranean. This is a prime spot for anyone who’s in need of a beach and seaside getaway: a minute’s easy stroll from the site will bring you to a sheltered cove where you can build sandcastles, go for a dip and soak up the summer sun... or you can wander up and down the coast to try out the many sandy stretches nearby. Want a break from finding sand in every crevice but don’t want to give up on your ocean paradise? Clamber into the saddle instead and bike along the 13-kilometre cycle path that runs the length of the Ostuni marina, or explore the ancient olive groves and historical farmhouses of Dune Costiere natural regional park, 15 minutes away. If you’re starting to overheat in the Mediterranean sun, retreat to site to cool off under the shade of the trees and have a laid back few hours of football tournaments, bowls and table football before dinner. When you can’t ignore the hunger anymore, make your way to the restaurant or pizzeria, or make the rounds of the on-site butcher, greengrocer, supermarket and bazaar to stock up on the essentials for a top-notch barbecue.

Local attractions

Start your hols with a lengthy explore of Ostuni, the hilly city 20 minutes’ drive from base. Strolling around the scenic old town is a must, with stops at the city walls and the photoworthy Arco Scoppa (it’s like the famed Bridge of Sighs, but less watery), and there’s plenty more history to take in at the museums and the archaeological park. Time your stay just right and you’ll be around to see Ostuni come to life for the Cavalcata di Sant’Oronzo, the city’s patronal festival: it’s a spectacle of knights and horses, parades and feasting, and definitely not to be missed if your plans allow. Keep exploring the past with the spectacular Trulli of Alberobello – the UNESCO-listed conical houses are an essential stop hereabouts and the town’s winding streets are a dream to wander along. Visits to the pretty towns of Martina Franca, Monopoli and Polignano a Mare, and the city of Taranto, come highly recommended too for palazzos, Roman ruins, botanic gardens and ancient temples within 45 minutes. If the kids are starting to beg to be allowed to do something in this century, take them to see the stunning stalactites, stalagmites, fossils and canyons of the Castellana caves, or keep things above ground with a day of animals and rides at ZooSafari Fasnolandia and Acquapark Egnazia, both under half an hour away.
