  • Peaceful rural site in a truffle orchard in the hills of Le Marche
  • Food and wine tours and guided walks run from the site
  • Swimming pool, pétanque court, trampolines and pizza evenings
Some folks like to fill their holidays with all kinds of full-on activity; others prefer to take the chance to relax and enjoy the simpler things in life – peace and quiet, rural views and top-notch local food and wine. If you’re of the latter persuasion, you’re on to a winner at Casa Tartufo. Since moving to this gorgeous spot in the hills of Le Marche back in 2007, Dutch owners Ben and Sabine have set about befriending lots of local producers, and now offer guests wine tastings and olive oil tours along with weekly trips to a nearby agriturismo for a traditional homemade four-course dinner. Ben’s also become a dab hand with his wood-fired oven and holds regular pizza nights on site. Working up an appetite for all this fine dining and wining is easily done: the hills around here are full of hiking trails taking in pretty little medieval villages and gorgeous rural views, or you can venture a little further for hikes and wildlife spotting in the Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi Regional Natural Park, half an hour away. Should you have bambini wrinkling their noses at the idea of all this rural idyll, it’s worth noting that there’s plenty to cater for them, too – splashing around in the outdoor pool or paddling pool, bouncing on the trampoline, playing pétanque and generally running about in the open air. And you may find they take an interest in that pizza too…

Local attractions

The easiest way to get a taste of the local is to sign up for some of the tours organised by the site itself, visiting olive oil producers or sampling local wines accompanied by plates of cheese and salami. Ben and Sabine can also hook you up with a hiking guide to keep you on the right trail and point out points of interest or wildlife. Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi Regional Natural Park, half an hour away, is another fab place for a walk – birds of prey, wild boar and smaller mammals can often be seen as you hike here. In the middle of the park are the limestone karsts of the Frasassi Caves, which can be explored on a paved trail or by crawling through the tunnels on a caving tour. A little further afield, it will take you just under an hour to hit the Adriatic coast – head to Marotta for a family-friendly wide sandy beach with serviced and free areas.
