  • Peaceful site in the Zompo Lo Schioppo Regional Nature Reserve
  • Family run and close to the famed Zompo Lo Schioppo waterfall
  • Bar and barbecue area; local produce sales
It's a mighty fine waterfall – and nature reserve – that gives its name to Camping Lo Schioppo in Italy's Abruzzo region. It's only a minute's stroll from the site to the Zompo Lo Schioppo Regional Nature Reserve, a lushly green and scenic place that's home to the gushing waterfall of Zompo Lo Schioppo… go and get an eyeful. The reserve is a particularly prized part of Abruzzo for its natural springs and scenic surroundings, and Camping Lo Schioppo is a nifty place for sporty sorts, school trips and groups who meander along here to see the waterfall or to set off on hikes through the countryside: trails of varying difficulty run through the reserve. Around the region, Camping Lo Schioppo's L'Aquila province setting is about an hour from the spectacular Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, in a land of mountain biking and climbing as well as heady hikes. Rome is under two hours' drive to the west. Camping Lo Schioppo's team has set the site up to be in tune with its handsome countryside surroundings and to keep things comfy for large numbers of guests. There's plenty of green space for wandering, and good communal facilities including an equipped kitchen. Showers, toilets, a washing-up area and a parent and baby washroom are all on site; there's free wifi, and the bar sells local produce for picnics and barbecues. Local town Morino is under 10 minutes' drive away. And finally, for those non-Italians, what does zompo mean in the native language? It means jump, something you can gleefully do into the pool 80 metres below the waterfall's drop.

Electric grass touring caravan pitch

Liked: Very friendly and helpful. Very quiet as it is situated on the edge of a nature reserve. If you like walking in the Forrest you will love this site. Daily visit from baker and veg man. Small bar/ coffee shop. Clean showers and toilets.

Disliked: Slightly restricted access if towing a caravan. It can be done but you need to be careful.

Electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: The campsite was great. The hosts were wonderful! The hike to the waterfall was a little workout, but not bad at all for the non-hiker.

Disliked: You have the wrong address on the reservation for this campsite. We ended up on Lo Schioppo road and it was an absolute nightmare. You do have a link with directions which sends people to the right place, but the wrong address absolutely should not be on the reservation more prominently than the google pin. Please fix this for future travelers.

Local attractions

Set off by foot, bike or car to get to the region's ancient, cultural and natural sights, from wildlife watching around the Zompo Lo Schioppo Regional Nature Reserve to wandering around the castles and medieval hill towns of L'Aquila province. The Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park is well worth the hour's drive for days' worth of activities including horse riding, canoeing, and skiing around the park's three resorts. Wolves, wild boar, deer, polecats and lynxes are among the species to spot for wildlife watchers, along with birds of prey including golden eagles hunting high above. It's just over an hour's drive to province capital L'Aquila, a busy university town with a 14th-century cathedral, several palaces and a huge 16th-century Spanish fort that now houses the National Museum of Abruzzo. The province's second main city, Avezzano, is half an hour's drive from the site; from here, drive west to reach the nature reserve on Mount Salviano, home to several hiking trails centred around the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Pietraquaria.
