  • Family-friendly site, a 10-minute walk from the Mývatn lakeside
  • Bike hire available; cycle or walk the 37km route around the lake
  • Playground, launderette and small food shop on site
Planning a trip to Lake Mývatn? A mighty fine idea – this is a most splendid part of the world, with a peaceful setting, lots of birdlife and volcanic landscape. A stay at Hlíð Ferðaþjónusta is an equally fine plan: this family-friendly site has stunning views over the calm water from its spot in the middle of a centuries-old lava field. A 10-minute walk from the Mývatn lakeside, this is a prime spot for those planning to cycle or stroll on the scenic 37-kilometre route around the lake. When you’ve conquered that, turn your attention to the many other hiking trails and cycle paths in the area. The friendly site team can provide maps and directions to help with route planning; you can rent bikes from them too, as well as organise Icelandic horse riding tours. When you’re all trekked out, head back to base and ease achy muscles in the warm showers. There’s also a launderette to freshen up clothes for the next day’s adventures, plus a playground to take care of any unspent energy the kids may still have. A small on-site shop has snacks and everything you need to rustle up tasty breakfasts, alongside handy bits like toiletries, batteries, postcards and stamps (so you can keep friends at home up to date on your travels). More supplies can be picked up in Reykjahlíð village (10-minute walk), where there’s a supermarket, visitor centre and a few food and drink spots.

Local attractions

Rumour has it the minimal light pollution around Lake Mývatn makes it a great spot to catch the Northern Lights, so keep your eyes peeled. The area’s volcanic landscape also opens up a bunch of enticing activities and interesting sights. Take a dip in the Mývatn Nature Baths (five-minute drive), a set of geothermally heated pools and steam baths, or explore the bubbling pools of mud and steaming fumaroles at Hverir (10 minutes). There’s also a thermal spring inside Grjótagjá (10 minutes), a small lava cave that fans of Game of Thrones might recognise. Continue explores with a visit to the Skútustaðagígar craters (15 minutes), a particularly good area for birdwatching, or admire the Selfoss waterfall (an hour). For some educational times, you’ll have your pick of museums nearby. Choose from Sigurgeir's Bird Museum (10 minutes), The Exploration Museum, which is dedicated to the history of human exploration (40 minutes), Ystafell Transportation Museum (45 minutes), Icelandic Aviation Museum (an hour) and Into The Arctic (an hour). If it’s gardens you’re after, try the Botanical Garden Akureyri, or the park and garden at Kjarnaskógur (both around one hour). For animal encounters, head to Petting Zoo Daladýrð (an hour).

Bisher unser bester Campingplatz!
