  • Peaceful and pretty site with shrubs and trees for plenty of shade
  • A 20-minute drive to Prüm town and a five-minute walk to Bleialf
  • Swimming pool (open in peak season) and a play tent
Make sure to pack a page-turner (or three) for a trip to Camping Bleialf – this pretty Rhineland site on the outskirts of the Eifel National Park serves as a lush green backdrop for flicking through a book among the shrubs and trees. And if nesting in nature with a novel’s not for you…? No problem. This is also a fine place to use as a base for days spent wandering through German beech forests (filled with wildcats, red deer and eagle owls) or at the lush Belgian Ardennes (40 minutes’ drive). Popular places to potter around nearby include the marked trails at Black Man, one of the most famed destinations in the Eifel, a 10-minute drive away; alternatively, head off on hikes 20 minutes away in the Alfbach forest. For kid-friendly cycling tours, reasonably flat bike paths run past disused railway lines and rivers in the local area as well. Younger travellers will have lots to do back on site as well – along with having an outdoor play area and a kids' tent with table tennis, books and relaxation areas, Camping Bleialf’s also got a (peak season) swimming pool for splash time. Planning on running errands while the other half cares for the smaller members of your family? It’s a five-minute walk to the centre of Bleialf for amenities including car and bike rental, supermarkets, butchers, bakeries and pastry shops. Other facilities include well-maintained toilets and showers as well as cold-water taps.

Electric grass and gravel pitch

Liked: Not a lot

Disliked: Very shabby site in poor condition, particularly the electrical cabling to the pitches which was nailed to rotting and collapsed low wooden fences and looked highly dangerous. The service was terrible, with the reception only reachable by phone as it was closed. There was a €25 deposit on the car entry key card, which I have never experienced before. There was a disabled toilet/shower, but it was always occupied by the, seemingly, able bodied. I am disabled. It was also virtually impossible to get anything to eat in the area without a reservation at the, very, limited options available! Oh, and the wi fi didn’t work!

Local attractions

Activities in the Rhineland are varied, with everything from zoos and old battle sites to ice caves and Benedictine abbeys to explore. Get over to the Eifel Zoo for animals galore or head to Saint Vith to see the famed site of a Belgian skirmish (both 20 minutes’ drive). The caves in Birresborn (40 minutes), on the other hand, are spots to seek out for adventures in the woods – bring a torch to help you creep through the subterranean passageways. Back up at ground level, mix up art-spotting and outdoor wanders at Skulpturenpark Kruft (15 minutes), a splendid space run by a family of blacksmiths who've filled their spacious park with hand-crafted copper and steel wildlife-inspired sculptures (think bees, butterflies and herons) that live between pretty ponds and fountains. If you’ve hopes of sampling some excellent German booze, sign up for a brewery tour in Bitburg (40 minutes). Alternatively, for more of a spiritual way to spend your time, the Benedictine Abbey of St. Maurice and St. Maur (50 minutes) is a top choice. City slickers, meanwhile, might like to amble around Aachen (an hour and 20 minutes) for a look at the 800 AD cathedral and the medieval shrine of Charlemagne. Luxembourg’s capital is a little further away (an hour and a half) but has equally impressive sights including a fortified old town first built in the Middle Ages.
