  • Family-friendly safari tent stays by a forest and surrounded by vines
  • Just outside Gerbach, a 15-minute drive from Falkenstein Castle
  • Chlorine-free pool, adventure activities, restaurant, shop and fields
Always fancied sleeping in a safari tent in a rural region under starry skies? Then rove over to Rhineland-Palatinate for a chilled-out Camping Donnersberg hol in a hilly area on the outskirts of a forest, just outside Gerbach. This is a fab spot surrounded by vineyards to explore and with plenty to keep you at the park when you’re not off quaffing wine. There’s a chlorine-free pool for swim-filled days, organised workshops such as woodfire cooking, and a golf course for honing your swing. To amble off base, ask about the activities organised by tour operator Grizzly Adventure (in high season and some weekends), like forest night walks and survival trips, or spend days paddling about on one of the park’s canoes or trotting through the hills on a horse-riding trip. You could also rent a mountain or electric bike and zoom about on the nearby cycling paths. Holidaying with a four-legged friend? If their paws get muddy during walks in the woods, or they need a cooldown after taking on the site’s dog agility track, rinse them off in the special pet shower. For eats, pull up a chair at the restaurant’s terrace and indulge in some German schnitzel out in the open air or order food at the snack bar. The small shop stocks fresh bread in the mornings and, if you’ve forgotten any key kit, camping gear is sold at the Grizzly Store. And the facilities don’t stop there… This park also has sporty types sorted with archery, a sports field, tennis and table tennis, plus kids are catered for as well with entertainment, a playground and a bouncy castle. With so much to keep them amused, who could blame you for leaving the tiddlers in the capable hands of your other half while you sneak off for a massage?

Local attractions

When you’re not out wandering in woodland or basking on base by the pool, there’s a handful of historical sights to see in this region. One is the highest castle in Germany, Falkenstein (or Castrum Pfronten), a set of ruins soaring 1,277 metres above sea level (15 minutes’ drive); another is Burg Monfort, a crumbling château with stunning views from its walls (25 minutes). Also a 25-minute drive from base is the Keltendorf Steinbach Celtic village, which recreates what life was like for the locals in days of yore. Speaking of the past, this region has a proud mining heritage and is littered with various old quarries worth walking around, many of which used to be crammed full of precious stones.
