  • Quiet site at the edge of a forest and between green meadows
  • A 10-minute drive from Hamelin and 35 minutes to hiking in Ith
  • Outdoor swimming pool, play areas, restaurant and bar
On a German jaunt and brought the pup along too? Pooches can bound through Campingplatz am Waldbad in Weserbergland, a place in the countryside where four-legged friends stay free and have green meadows as well as foresty surrounds to dash about in. Got young humans with you too? They’re also sure to be racing around the big lawn at this family-run site, or jumping into the outdoor pool for splashy sessions not long after arrival. Grownups, meanwhile, can supervise in peace from the spacious sunbathing area by the water’s side. Kids can take to the playground as well – home to a ship, swing tower, climbing frame and sandbox – or hone their sporting skills on the table tennis table. With the threat of carting them off to the setting of the Pied Piper tale in Hamelin, a 10-minute drive away, they should stay well behaved… The promise of snacks at the bar and restaurant on site (plus bits and pieces like bread rolls and ice cream for sale at reception) usually tempers cranky moods too. Seating areas are sprinkled around the park for dining with the full clan, and a supermarket is about 10 minutes away in Hamelin. Bikers and runners are also sorted at this rural site, with paths in the surrounds for circumnavigating on two wheels or feet. Ith (35 minutes’ drive away) is a hotspot for hiking in the Central Uplands and is also fab for rock climbing; crags to scale here include memorably named monoliths like the Devil's Kitchen and Frog’s Head.

Local attractions

Hamelin’s a hub for tourists thanks to its link with the famed Pied Piper story but this town also has plenty more to it than simply serving as the supposed home of the crafty character, including an old district with restored Renaissance houses made from sandstone and tours to take around olden streets. If you’re intrigued by the background of the rat-catching musician, skedaddle over to the museum to find out more; guests can also mosey to the centre of Hamelin on Wednesdays in the summer months for a free musical at the Palais Blanc. For culture any day of the week, Schloss Hämelschenburg is 20 minutes’ drive from this park and has tours of a Renaissance-era castle in leafy countryside. Visitors can also drive 35 minutes to Süntel for treks with sweeping valley views, caves to clamber through and waterfalls to wander beside.
