  • Well-maintained Bavaria campsite in vineyards at Triefenstein am Main
  • Half an hour’s drive to Würzburg and moated Mespelbrunn Castle
  • Sports, restaurant and shop on site; swimming pool five minutes’ walk
Surrounded by vineyards on the eastern slope of the Main River valley near Triefenstein am Main, Camping Main-Spessart-Park is an immaculately maintained campsite half an hour’s drive from historic Würzburg in northern Bavaria. With a good collection of sporting and catering facilities on site, it’s a clever choice for family camping holidays, as well as a handy base for cultural sightseers to happily potter around the region’s many riverside castles and towns. There’s lots of sporty fun to be had around the place: boules, football, beach volleyball, badminton and table tennis for starters, plus a leisure hall where teens can hang out with friends. In high season, Triefenstein’s outdoor swimming pool opens (five minutes’ walk, with spa facilities for adults), while on-site entertainment teams organise sports tournaments and boat trips along the Main for kids. During the rest of the year, younger guests can let off steam at the playground and there’s a pet corner for furry cuddles too. All your foodie needs are taken care of on site, with an open fireplace in the communal barbecue area, and a tasty combination of Italian pasta dishes with local specialities like schnitzel on the menu at the on-site restaurant. Going down the self-catering route? Pick up essentials at the small shop next to reception – and from April to October, fresh bread rolls are delivered daily to the campsite. Fancy a change of scenery? Head for Marktheidenfeld (10 minutes’ drive) for cosy restaurants and beer gardens.

Electric optional grass tent pitch (small, two person)

Liked: Excellent location near the River Main and not far from Wurzburg, opportunities to swim nearby in the pool complex and wild swimming in the town lake 2km to the south. Friendly staff, very clean facilities.

Disliked: Be aware that cars are not permitted to enter or leave the site for a couple of hours running up to 15:00.

From the manager: On many campsites in Germany there is a quiet time between 12:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. With us, this quiet time is from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. We recommend leaving the car in the parking lot in front of the campsite before 1:00 p.m., then you can also drive between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The management

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: The shower units were large, clean and the water was hot. Their was a separate toilet and shower unit for parent and toddler. The dishwashing area was large and clean. The clothes washing area was well equipped. The play areas were well equipped and maintained. The restaurant staff were exceptionally friendly. The food was of a good standard and not too expensive.

Disliked: There is far too much gravel on the 'grass pitches'. The gravel is small and pointy, so you must have a footprint, although even with that, there is a possibility for damage to your tent. This was really, really disappointing. The restaurant does not accept cards. The waitress did explain that they were in dispute with the card companies and were trying to fix the problem, but it has already been an issue for over a month and with no end in sight. So, make sure you bring cash. The WiFi does not extend to throughout the site. The WiFi signal is available, but trying to connect is impossible, especially at the back end of the site. We had roaming on our phones, but we could still not pick up a signal, so prepare for that.

Local attractions

Active types can easily access the flat cycling and hiking paths that border the Main River (five minutes’ walk), or meander along waterside paths past castles and waterfalls in Bayerischer Spessart Nature Park (40 minutes). Combine your walking with sightseeing in the cobbled streets of Würzburg (half an hour’s drive), known for its Baroque architecture lining graceful plazas and the hilltop art museum at Marienberg Fortress. To gain a deeper insight into Bavarian culture past and present, have a play on the interactive technology exhibits at Eisenhammer Hasloch (15 minutes) industrial museum, or see how Bavarian aristocracy lived on a visit to the moated Renaissance-era Mespelbrunn Castle (half an hour) with guided tours of its grand interior and a wander around the waterside gardens. Taste local wines at the terraced vineyards in Franconia Wine Country and the Spessart nature park. Most kids will hanker after a trip to Wildgehege am Klingenwiesengraben (20 minutes) to feed deer, get up close to wild boar and follow nature trails through woodland. If they’re after even more animal action, try keeper talks and bird of prey flying displays at Bad Mergentheim WildPark (an hour).
