  • Family-run site in the Tauber valley, five mins' walk from Laudenbach
  • Five minutes' drive from Weikersheim; 25 from Rothenburg ob der Tauber
  • Next to the Liebliches Taubertal bike path; cycle hire on site
It’s time to raise a glass to the Tauber valley – and to days spent roaming around forest, hills, pretty towns and (most importantly) vineyards. And then to raise another (well, you are on holiday…) to Camping Schwabenmühle, a family-run site that makes a fab base for alfresco activities around these parts. Planning to pedal your way around? The site is right next to the Liebliches Taubertal bike path and close to many more kilometres of trail to take your two wheels along. Hikers can busy themselves by following signposted trails for more than 100 kilometres (not all in one go…) and horse riders can saddle up a couple of kilometres away. Much less strenuous than all of the above is the walk to the nearest village, Laudenbach, which takes only around five minutes and promises food-based rewards at the bakery, supermarket and restaurant. Eats are likely to be of high importance here (given all the activity that awaits) so it’s worth noting that options are aplenty: the site has a café/bar and a cooking area with microwave, and there’s a good selection of restaurants five minutes’ drive away in Weikersheim. Also likely to be high on the priority list is a good hot shower, provided here at smart modern bathroom blocks kitted out with accessible and family shower rooms along with a baby changing area and special kids’ toilets. Other nods to family life on site include a playground, wifi for gadget addicts and a cosy reading corner where tired souls can crash out with a book.

Local attractions

It’s not just the rural surrounds that are pretty; several of the towns are rather handsome too. Weikersheim, five minutes away by car, is certainly worth a wander – a highlight is the Renaissance castle, an opulent affair where the nippers can join spooky tours, be a prince/princess for the day and giggle at the gnome garden. The spa town of Bad Mergentheim (20 minutes) is another fab place to put on the list, or you can follow the Romantic Road to the walled medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber (25 minutes). There’s another gorgeous castle garden here, but much of the fun is in wandering through the cobbled streets and taking in the turrets and half-timbered houses that look like something straight out of a fairytale. Take a break from town visits at Bad Mergentheim Wild Park (15 minutes), home to 80 species of beasties, or by stopping for a swim at the lake in Rinderfeld (10 minutes). And of course one mustn’t forget the wine, yours for the sipping at several vineyards within a 10-minute drive or 40-minute bike ride.

Electric optional grass and gravel pitch

Liked: Just everything. From the minute we went into reception to when we booked out nothing was too much trouble. Very modern facilities that are very clean. Staff were more than willing to help book bus/train or restaurants for you. Even the local wine and beer is free to sample at reception so you can take home a few bottles ! Put it on your list to stay

Disliked: Nothing

Liked: Outstanding welcome and informative staff, shower and toilet block some of the best we have found across Europe. Spotless clean and every need catered for. Loved the atmospheric reading area and outside seating area. Grounds of the site immaculately maintained. Ease of access to the Romantic route and cycle pathways.

Electric optional grass and gravel pitch

Liked: Clean, excellent facilities, really good shower, for free. Good pitches, either space. Very good location, 2 minute walk from village, with 2 pub/restaurants, shop, and bakery. Very friendly staff, eager to help, and gave us a map of the romantic road, which we had no idea existed.

Disliked: Only one set of toilets at reception, a bit of a walk in the night, from the camper, if not using the toilet, inside.
