  • Peaceful lakeside site in the Schwäbisch-Fränkische hills
  • Four and a half kilometres from Waldenburg and on the Castle Road
  • Games room, playground and café; barbecues allowed
If you’re after a hol within easy reach of a health resort, bounce over to breathe in the fresh air at Camping Neumühlsee, four and a half kilometres from the small Baden-Württemberg town of Waldenburg in the lush surrounds of the Schwäbisch-Fränkische hills. This peaceful site is well placed for days lingering on the banks of a lake, interspersed by fishing for the adults and games room or playground antics for mini travellers… Caught a critter? Get it on the barbecue, or fuel up in the café, plonking yourself on the outdoor tables to feast with your eyes as well as your belly; a supermarket is a 15-minute drive away if you’re cooking. All full up and feeling energetic? Plenty of adventures can be had in the surrounding area around Camping Neumühlsee: this site is in the Schwäbisch Hall – Künzelsau – Öhringen triangle for town days and is on Germany’s famed Castle Road leading for almost 1,200 kilometres from the city of Mannheim. Closer to home, two cycle paths run alongside the grounds for days out by bike, and Obere Weide nature reserve is five minutes’ drive for toddling through the greenery. For roams at a ruin, the 13th-century Waldenburg Castle – destroyed in World War II and then partially rebuilt – is 10 minutes from the park. For lakeside days away from Neumühlsee, Breitenauer See (35 minutes) has trails to traipse around and vineyards where visitors can sup lots of locally made booze...

Local attractions

For even fresher air, guests can get over to the Waldenburg Hills (a 15-minute drive for hiking through forests) or ramble beside the rivers Ohrn and Kupfer (both 20 minutes away). For urban times, Germany’s got a host of pretty towns to visit, and Schwäbisch Hall, Künzelsau and Öhringen (all a 25-minute drive from the site) are up there with some of the best of them; try Schwäbisch Hall for cool cultural finds like Kunsthalle Würth, a building that’s a mishmash of the medieval and modern, and home to a selection of Reinhold Würth's industrial-style art collection. If you’re impressed by these pieces, Künzelsau has more plus a host of other creative displays at the Museum Würth. More swayed by cooking than culture? The medieval kitchen – not to mention the tiptop museum – at Neuenstein Castle in Öhringen is also a 25-minute drive away…

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: The shower, toilet and washing areas were generally very clean.

Disliked: Unfortunately a lot more disliked than liked: We arrived about 130pm, but were told we weren’t allowed entry until 2pm. Despite pitchup saying arrival from 12.30pm. We had to ask 3 times where we were meant to pitch our tent as the only instructions were “keep going until there is no more road” no mention of the easily identifiable mini golf course next to the pitch site. The ground was completely full of stones and made putting pegs in very difficult, not exactly the campsites fault but worth knowing. Somebody (not sure if they were an employee or not) told us at around 8pm on the first night that we weren’t allowed fires, or coal bbq’s despite both being explicitly mentioned on the booking page (and indeed, why we booked this site.) We later found out through our own research this was due to the lack of rain and danger of fires, a completely fair point, but we feel this should’ve been mentioned at the time of booking. Especially as we were in a tent and this was our only way to cook food! We’d brought wood with us and rather than driving it around in the car we decided to leave it underneath a table. On the 3rd day it had disappeared and a neighbour told us someone had accused us of starting fires and taken it all. No staff member or owner ever spoke to us about this. The site is also listed as having a restaurant on site, but every time we drove past it was closed, with no visible opening hours anywhere. We’d also booked this site as it was right next to a swimming/boating lake, but this also wasn’t allowed due to an algae bloom (we weren’t advised this by the campsite, again found out for ourselves.) this is something else that we feel should of been told about when we booked. A few days in and our bin bags were starting to get full, in a bit of a running theme we had not been told where to put the rubbish either. We went to ask at the restaurant at about 8pm, but again it looked closed, we did however find the person who had told us about the fire on the first night. Assuming he worked there we asked him, but he didn’t answer and went to get the owner. The owner came out looking quite displeased and told us the ‘rubbish went in the bins’ I explained that we hadn’t actually been told where that was, and he vaguely pointed In a direction and that seemed to be the end of the conversation. Also, be warned that this site has basically no mobile phone service, not normally a problem. But when we have to eat out every night it became a bit of a pain trying to find somewhere!

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Location isolated but off site very nice by the lake. Popular for picnics

Disliked: Camping was mainly locals with makeshift cabins. All friendly but not what we expected looked nothing like the photos on pitch up. As mentioned in a previous review no phone signal or if your lucky a very poor one.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Seemed like a nice location in countryside by lake

Disliked: No wifi or 3G/4G phone signal. Given phone signal is so poor, it would good for the site to provide wifi. I had paid in full upfront for 2 nights so lost my money as I needed a connection to do some work so had to move on to another place. In fairness there was no claim on the website that wifi was available but it also wasn't clear to me when booking there would be no signal at all. Hence I am keen to provide this info for others.
