  • Spectacular Ubaye valley and river setting in the southern French Alps
  • Regular activities such as rafting, kids' rafting and mountain biking
  • Pool, playground, restaurant and direct access to the river with beach
Colourful, high up and with canoeing galore: all ages are sorted at this southern French Alps site. And the setting is pretty splendid too: Domaine de l'Ubaye is in spectacular surrounds among these mighty scenic mountains, in the Ubaye valley which runs from Lac de Serre-Ponçon to the Italian border. It's 10 minutes' drive from the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence communes of Méolans-Revel and Barcelonnette, between the Écrins and the Mercantour national parks. And for that colour, high-upness and canoeing? The Ubaye valley is famed for its wildflowers (as well as its diversity of wildlife including marmots and chamois), and the site is 1,055 metres above sea level, by the banks of a river with direct access to the water for swimming and rafting. Kids are well covered for this last too, as the site team also arranges weekly rafting sessions for all ages – part of a full programme of activities that includes mountain bike excursions, a kids' club and evening entertainment. Pétanque, tennis, badminton, football and volleyball are also on site, along with a colourful playground, a big heated pool and a paddling pool with slide. The park has a smart restaurant and bar refurbished in 2017, serving daily menus and a la carte using local ingredients, and a shop stocked with essentials, fresh goods and drinks.

Local attractions

Sporting options are all around the valley's mountains and lakes: the Domaine de l'Ubaye team at reception can pass on their information and top tips. If you crave yet more watersports after all the canoeing straight from the site, drive 45 minutes to the fab Lac de Serre-Ponçon, one of the biggest artificial lakes in western Europe. Days out in and on the water are bookable from several of the lake's shoreside towns and villages; you can also stop off on land for spectacular views of the water from the surrounding hills and mountains, such as on the drive from nearby Barcelonnette towards Emburn. The UNESCO site of Mont-Dauphin is just to the north of the lake, an hour and 10 minutes' drive from the site.
