  • Peaceful glamping site on an eco park 10 minutes' drive from Laval
  • Lots of on-site activities including canoeing, fishing and archery
  • Meal trays and picnic baskets available for delivery
Nature calls in a pretty big way at Echologia – this Mayenne glamping site is part of a big eco park that’s transformed a cluster of abandoned 19th-century lime quarries into a peaceful natural reserve with heaps of wholesome activities on site. Days here are filled with all manner of fun things: swimming in the chemical-free swimming pool, grabbing one of the free canoes to paddle around the lake, fishing for crayfish, taking aim at an archery session or meeting the farm animals, maybe...? There’s also a fab interpretative trail through the park, with plenty to see and do at you roam at your own pace: wooden games, veg gardens on floating rafts and the mysterious ‘troglodyte donkey cabin’. Units are spread around a pleasingly large area, giving you plenty of space for relaxing in the fresh air and for kids and dogs to run about and play games (and for grownups too, should you wish). Once settled in your serene spot it’s quite possible you may lose all will to move: to that end, the friendly folks on site can arrange for meal trays or picnic baskets to be delivered to your digs for fab feasts with minimal effort. Concerned that all this nature might get a bit too much? Fret not, the lovely town of Laval is a 10-minute drive away for all the urban amenities you may require, including a rather fine collection of fromageries.

Local attractions

Clearly there’s much to do on site, but it’s worth taking some time to explore the surrounds as well. It’s said that there are two cows for every person in the dairy-producing Mayenne region, so this is a particularly appealing area for cheese fiends. Get the lowdown at the Lactopôle museum in Laval before poking around the town’s fromageries for local treats. Also in Laval are the 12th-century château, where you can take a guided tour of the dungeon tower and see the low chapel used as a prison during the French Revolution, and the Jardin de la Perrine, filled with colourful blooms and home to a small menagerie of goats. Half an hour away is Jublains, a well-preserved ancient Roman town for wanders around the amphitheatre, baths, temple and fortress. If you fancy going back further, it's also half an hour to Saulges, where some 150 prehistoric caves have been unearthed in the midst of a canyon surrounding by cracking views and walks. At present a pair of caves plus their Palaeolithic interior wall paintings are open to the public, and if rock art doesn't appeal there's rock climbing to be had in the area too.
