  • Quirky rustic lodges in northern France, 50 minutes’ drive from Calais
  • Under an hour’s drive to Le Touquet and Boulogne-sur-Mer
  • Fishing ponds 10-minute drive; Dennlys Parc theme park 2-min drive
Cosy up with friends or family in a rustic-style lodge at Holiday Village near Reclinghem – there's much to do nearby, but this spot in rural Pas-de-Calais is a particularly good choice if hiking and biking are high on your holiday tick list. Within 30 minutes’ drive you can reach the Regional Nature Park of the Opal Capes and Marshes with its rolling countryside, forests, estuaries and coastline to explore. The popular Opal Coast towns of Le Touquet and Boulogne-sur-Mer are both around a 50-minute drive away. Fishing fans can indulge their passion closer to home – under 10 minutes’ drive away in Matringhem – at the Étang Martin Pécheur where 12 ponds are set up for all types of angling, whether you’re casting alone or in a group, with kids or looking to compete. Guests at Holiday Village get a discount and you can also book your own private trout pond at a sister campsite five kilometres away. Right on site the kids can scramble all over the playground and there are spaces to play table tennis, football and pétanque. If you fancy a swim or more to keep the kids happy, you can make the most of the pools and activities at the two sister sites within a 10-minute drive too. On the practical side, as well as all the comforts found inside your lodge, there’s a launderette and drying room on site if you need them. Oh, and there’s no need to leave your dog at home, as four-legged friends are very much welcome at Holiday Village too.

Irlande 4 bedroom lodge (open balcony, seven person)

Liked: Very quaint, rustic little lodges with quirky furnishings, set deep in the French countryside. Well furnished with pretty much everything you need, you'll just need basics like soap, washing up liquid etc, but bedding is supplied. Comfortable and warm. Ideal base for a short break, or as a stop-off when heading further south or east. Only 45 minutes from the Calais ferries, Cite Europe and Eurotunnel, 15 minutes from the A26 autoroute (just over 3 Euros toll each way from Calais at the time of writing), and 50 minutes from Boulogne-sur-Mer. Literally round the corner from a small theme park. 10 minutes to Fauquembergues for the nearest supermarket and petrol station.

Disliked: Nit-picking more than anything... Not the most obvious place to find! Stairs upstairs were a bit tricky as they were open and awkward headroom (see photo). Key is in a code-locked box, so you'll need the code - unfortunately the office was closed so there was a bit of a language barrier as the only staff we saw was a cleaner; thankfully she was helpful enough and rang the owner, so we got the code in the end! Might be worth emailing or ringing just beforehand to get the code before arrival - otherwise we were left to it. Info sheet asked us to empty bins but there was nowhere to put them!

Local attractions

About 700m from the lodges is Dennlys Parc, a theme park with rides and amusements to suit all your little ones and big ones. You could walk there in under 10 minutes, or get in the car and you’ll be there in two minutes. The whole family are also likely to find something to spark their interest at La Coupole (20 minutes’ drive), a World War II museum and 3D planetarium in a huge underground bunker. Travel back in time a little further at the Medieval History Centre of Azincourt (20 minutes) where interactive displays teach you all about medieval warfare and the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. And if you want to visit a castle from around the same time while you’re in the area, the ruins at Château de Fressin (25 minutes) are an atmospheric place to imagine what life would have been like.
