  • Family-friendly rural site just outside the village of Zegerscappel
  • A half-hour drive from the coast; 40 minutes from Ypres battlefields
  • Heated indoor swimming pool, plus bar and food trucks in summer
It’s all very much ‘groene veld’ surrounds indeed at Nord-Pas-de-Calais site Domaine du Groene Veld (that’s ‘green field’ for those whose Dutch isn’t up to much). There are farmland views all around at this rural spot 20 minutes walk from the village of Zegerscappel (and less than 10 minutes’ drive from the bigger town of Wormhout for more extensive amenities). In an effort to maintain that peaceful rural atmosphere, the folk here have set their place up without any noisy activities or entertainment. There’s no need to worry about that leading to bored kids, though: there are plenty of facilities to keep them (and your good selves) busy, including a playground, a pétanque court, a fishing lake and a swimming pool that’s both heated and covered (but not supervised, so please do keep a beady eye on the smaller swimmers). During the summer months, a bar serves up cool drinks, and food trucks trundle by a couple of times a week (classic crepes on a Monday and proper French fries on a Thursday…) Barbecues are allowed for those who fancy alfresco eats on other days of the week, and there’s a bread service to deliver fresh bits for brekkie. Heading out, it’ll take you half an hour to get to the coast for the beach at Bray-Dunes or the ferries at Dunkirk, or to Saint-Omer for salt marsh boat trips. You might also consider days out in Lille or heading over the border into Belgium to pay homage at the battlefields in Ypres; both are within a 45-minute drive.

Local attractions

While roaming around the rural surrounds, it’s a fine idea to plan stops in Bergues (a fortified town with an ancient abbey, ramparts and bell tower) and Cassel (for another hint of Dutch influence at the wooden windmill and cobbled main square) – both are 15 minutes' drive away. You’re likely to want to a good chunk of time over at the coast, too: there are sandy beaches at Bray-Dunes (half an hour) and de Panne (35 minutes) and also around Dunkirk (25 minutes) – which has a zoo and several museums to mix things up a bit too. Turn away from the sea and there are more water-based days out around Saint-Omer (25 minutes), launching point for boat trips in the surrounding salt marshes. Venturing over the border to Ypres (40 minutes) is bound to be a moving experience – the site of some of World War I’s darkest battles is now home to In Flanders Fields Museum and several memorials; stick around until 8pm if you can, to hear the Last Post being played (as it has been every evening since 1928).
