  • Well-equipped hut in the Hautes-Pyrénées, 15 minutes from Lourdes
  • Link up with the GR101 hiking trail or climb the Pic de Pibeste
  • Double bed, ensuite bathroom and outdoor terrace area
Put your best foot forward in Ségus for a cosy stay in a well-equipped hut, 15 minutes from Lourdes, heading out onto Hautes-Pyrénées hiking trails just 200 metres from your door. The adults-only hut at Cab'ânes du Pibeste is built for comfort – there’s heating and air conditioning, so you can be as toasty or chilled as you like, and the double bed is a welcome sight for a good night’s sleep after all that trekking. Also tucked into your spacious cabin are a dining area and an ensuite bathroom with a shower, toilet and sink. All sheets and towels are included too, so you can travel light… or at least make room for all your hiking gear. Outside is a terrace area where you can sit with your breakfast (which is included) while admiring the mountain views… and making pals with the resident donkeys, of course. It’s also possible to eat here in the evenings, which is handy when you’ve done all the walking you want to (or physically can do) for one day. Wifi is free, so updating pals on your day’s efforts or plotting more outings is a cinch.

Local attractions

The proximity of hiking trails puts treks firmly on the menu, so don your boots and link up with the scenic GR101 trail, which runs from Maubourguet to Col de Saucède (passing through Ségus) – it’s more than 90 kilometres in length, so it should keep you busy for a little while. Those who fancy an uphill challenge may like to tackle the nearby Pic de Pibeste – the fab views of the Pyreneean peaks while you trek should hopefully keep you going as you climb. When you’re all hiked out, head into Lourdes (15 minutes' drive) to join the pilgrims at the famed Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. Spread over a whopping 51 hectares with 22 places of worship, there’s a great deal to see here, including churches, chapels and crypts, pretty stained-glass art, and the underground Basilica of St Pius X. And then there’s the Lourdes water, believed to have healing powers (good news for post-hike muscles?). Fountains and baths are all over the site, with the option to drink or bathe in the good stuff. To hang out with creatures other than humans, head to Argelès-Gazost (20 minutes), home to the Pyrénées Animal Park. Or focus attentions on inanimate (but mighty pretty) objects at Château de Pau (50 minutes), which houses a collection of tapestries at its museum.
