In 1957, a naturist haven was set up here, deep in the peace of the French Gâtinais Regional Natural Park. These days visitors with clothing-free ideals still stay here, in the family-friendly atmosphere of Club Naturiste du Soleil de l'Essonne. ‘A thousand glades and sandstone’ is how the Essonne valley has been described, and those contrasts are just as plain at the site. Private pitches are enveloped in seven hectares of trees, for sunshine or shade just as you please. The quiet of the forests is yours for the taking, while activities like pétanque and volleyball or a swim in one of the pair of heated pools are to hand for slightly more active pursuits. A playground and a communal kitchen with an oven and microwave are also on site. It's a 10-minute drive to the shops and eateries of D'huison-Longueville, a town typical of this part of France and a top spot to pick up a picnic to have on the banks of the Essonne. An absolute must is the local Gâtinais honey, slathered on a chunk of warm bread... and smelling of the floral woodlands it's come from. Please note that nudity is required on this campsite and is mandatory in the swimming pool area.

Local attractions

D'Huison-Longueville is the starting point for three splendid circular walks through the glades and woods of the surrounding valley, varying in length between four and a half and 10 kilometres. If you fancy combining your wild side with a bit of a culture, there's a canny walk at Vaudoué (30 minutes) where the rocky forested trail leads through human history via artworks among the trees. Rambles in the saddle are another fine way to take in the sights: an equestrian centre is close to the site in Orveau 10 minutes' drive away. If you've picked up a taste for the hunter-gatherer lifestyle during your stay, then try catching supper in the pools and ponds around Vayres-sur-Essonne (15 minutes' drive, permit required). While you're gazing into the waters, glance up and consider where they're going... the Essonne joins the Seine as it flows into Paris, and you could be there too in an hour's drive, to swap the peaceful vibe of your forest berth with a look at the bling of Louis XIV's gilded playground palace, Versailles. For the medieval equivalent, mosey over to the mega cathedral at Chartres, an hour and 20 minutes from the site.

Disliked: Road in wasn’t really suitable for motorhome tree overhang bell at gate wasn’t very clear
