  • Family-friendly holiday park on the southern edge of Corsica
  • Two kilometres from the coast; Bonifacio half an hour's drive away
  • Outdoor pool, bar, restaurant-pizzeria and games room
Attention all beach boys and girls – this splendid site in southern Corsica could well be the one for you. Camping Le Damier is a family-oriented holiday park two kilometres – that's a mere 20-minute walk – from the splendid sands of Pianottoli-Caldarello. It's also a short five-minute drive from the top of a windswept headland where you can pick up the Bruzzi path, a coastal trail that links up red sand beaches and some rather remarkable rock formations. Camping Le Damier is situated in the southernmost (and thus the sunniest) bit of the fab French isle of Corsica, half an hour's drive from the port city of Bonifacio. This tree-lined site has an ancient grove of cork oaks where shade can be sought, as well as a spacious outdoor pool for a refreshing dip. Provided there's room, you're also able to sling your hammock between the trees for an afternoon snooze… The popular on-site restaurant serves up pizzas bursting with pizzazz as well as Mediterranean à la carte meals. A bar is also on hand where ice cream, cocktails and soft drinks are in order. Self-catering can also be easily sorted too, as Camping Le Damier is just a five-minute drive from a large supermarket.

Local attractions

Grab your swimmies and slap on some sun cream – the beach beckons. But which one will you plonk yourself down on first? There's the far-famed Coral Beach (15 minutes' walk from central Pianottoli-Caldarello), where some of the pink sand is so fine that it can be seen floating in the water. There's also Chevanu beach (20 minutes' walk), a family-friendly swimming spot surrounded by greenery. Intrepid treks are to be had on the nearby Bruzzi path (five minutes' drive), a five-kilometre waymarked trail so-named for the far-off Bruzzi isles that can be spotted here on clear days. It's also well worth driving 25 minutes or so inland and heading up to see the Uomo di Cagna (or 'Cagna Man' in the local lingo) – it's a mountain peak, not a person, but the rocks in these hilly parts have been shaped by the wind over thousands of years to take on the human-like shapes that can be seen today. Looking for the adrenaline of mountaineering with a tad less exertion? Go for a guided segway tour around Propriano harbour (50 minutes) or book yourself onto a catamaran ride in Bonifacio (half an hour). While you're strolling around this latter spot, make sure to have a gander at the marine cemetery and old ramparts.
