  • Peaceful wooded site with playground in Calvados country
  • A 15-minute drive to Bayeux and 20 minutes to D-Day beaches
  • Half an hour to Asnelles and Arromanche beaches for windsurfing/walks
Breeze your way round Normandy’s beaches from this quiet base in Calvados country. In Bayeux,15 minutes' drive from this tree-filled site, the tapestry tells the story of the Norman invasion, and the beaches of Lower Normandy bear evidence of the more recent battles that ended World War Two. But nature's gained the upper hand, returning peace to this pretty region of sandy shores and clifftop paths, fishing towns and wetlands full of wildlife. Outside a quiet hamlet, Camping Le Creulet is a welcoming spot, surrounded by woods and fields. There’s a playground for kids, a boules court and barbecue area for everyone to use, and paths for biking and hiking right by the site. You could start your tours in Bayeux, a handsome town whose medieval character somehow escaped the last war unscathed; it’s amply stocked with shops, supermarkets, eats and treats, and the D-Day Museum (one of many dotted around the area) provides a good introduction to the recent history. Older history is recorded in the world famous tapestry, a must-see unless it’s been lent to Britain, so do check ahead. Saturdays are market day, time to wash farm cheeses down with locally made cider and Calvados.

Local attractions

On an inlet surrounded by wetlands, Carentan (20 minutes) has walking trails to the sea and is the place to book a boat trip through the marshes. Walks through the teeming and diverse landscape of the Parc Naturel des Marais du Cotentin start from the park centre at Saint Côme du Mont. The landing beaches of Omaha and Juno are 20 and 40 minutes’ drive away, memorable and sometimes haunting spots with adjacent museums recording the stories of courage and sacrifice. From Port-en-Bessin-Huppain (15 minutes), see the D-Day beaches from the sea on a boat tour... and make sure you sample the fresh fish and scallops in the harbour town on your way through. For energetic stuff on Normandy’s breezy coastline, windsurf at Asnelles (30 minutes), zoom the beach by sand yacht at Ouistreham (40 minutes), or kayak down the Orne river at Thury-Harcourt (50 minutes). Fine old seaside towns like Arromanches-sur-Mer (half an hour) serve up the more traditional stuff like swimming, paddling and walks along the cliffs. If you want to get higher than that, the Forest Centre at St-Sauveur-le-Vicomte has treetop walks, climbs and rope swings. Or beetle over to Château Balleroy (15 minutes) to see a museum devoted to hot air ballooning.
