  • Family site in the Dordogne’s Périgord-Limousin Natural Regional Park
  • Mareuil en Périgord 10 minutes’ drive; Brantôme 25 minutes
  • Swimming pool; kids’ club; yoga classes and exchange library
In the south-western reaches of Périgord-Limousin Natural Regional Park, Camping Domaine de Courneuil attracts guests with large grassy pitches fringed by the Dordogne region’s gentle forest-covered hills. This dog-friendly site sits between Angoulême and Périgueux (about 50 minutes’ drive from either), a 10-minute drive from Mareuil en Périgord, a small but well-served village where you might find independent bakeries, butcher shops and supermarkets, plus cafés and brasseries. The site itself is no slouch when it comes to facilities, starting with the heated swimming pool, which is surrounded by a large patio with sun loungers and a spray park for children. If you’re concerned that the kids are turning into little prunes from spending so much time in the pool, you might want to direct them to the playground or let them join the kids’ club, which organises activities ranging from treasure hunts and forest excursions to creative workshops. Meanwhile, you’ll be busy with your own pursuits, whether it’s exploring the surrounding countryside on two wheels, playing pétanque or taking part in a yoga class in the covered open-air dojo. Or simply getting a drink from the bar and sipping it while taking in the spectacular landscape or reading a book from the exchange library. If you don’t want to drive to the village to source your provisions, the on-site food shop stocks all basic necessities (including milk, eggs, butter and wine – that counts as a basic necessity on holiday, right?); there’s also a picnic area (with communal barbecues) and a restaurant where, in the morning, you can collect buttery pastries and freshly baked bread for breakfast. The toilet and shower block has facilities for disabled guests, as well as washing machines and dryers.

Local attractions

The site sits within Périgord-Limousin Natural Regional Park, where there’s a vast network of trails that can be tackled on foot, by bike or on horseback. During your wanderings, keep an eye out for the local wildlife, which includes butterflies, green lizards and bats, plus birds like red-backed shrikes. Known as the Venice of Périgord, the village of Brantôme (25 minutes’ drive) sits on the banks of the Dronne river, where a centuries-old Benedictine abbey is dominated by a tall, ornate Romanesque bell tower. At the back of the abbey, man-made caves carved into the limestone cliffs are decorated with bas-reliefs. The Grand Etang de St-Estèphe (25 minutes) is a large pond where you can indulge in activities ranging from fishing to swimming, and from watersports (including canoeing) to hiking along the forested trails. There’s also a playground and a BMX park, plus lakeside picnic areas.
