Peaceful family park set among Jutland's hills, moorlands and forests

The first ever Legoland on all the planet is an easy 25-kilometre drive from Camping Jelling in Southern Denmark's Vejle Municipality. This means, of course, that constructing days of high excitement should be a cinch on your Danish hol, around the brick-based theme park and its neighbours Givskud Zoo and Lalandia waterpark. (Perhaps don't overload the kids with facts about all these mighty fun destinations until you're just about to leave for Jutland.) Also around for excitable offspring is Fårup Lake, a few kilometres from the site, where they can take to the water in a hired pedalo or boat, and Abrahamsen’s Farm petting zoo at Jelling Forest, next to the lake. If they're a bloodthirsty lot (ja?), take them too to Jelling Vikingmuseum, a kilometre's pillage away. And… breathe. For in between all this lot, Camping Jelling is a quiet family park, set among Jutland's forested slopes in a peaceful and remote location. But although it has a serene vibe, there's enough to do here for kids to distract them from pestering you about the next trip to Legoland – and enough hiking and biking starting from the site surrounds that you can tire small people out before they can say interlocking plastic bricks. There's a fine adventure playground, for starters, with swings, slide and a huge jumping pillow; a cute and colourful games room with video games, toys and books; a pétanque court, and – a cert to be a hit – a summer kids' club. And for the grownups? You might like the bar and restaurant with scenic terrace and the heated outdoor pool with waterslides: kids are most welcome in the water too. Jelling village is within 15 minutes' walk.

Local attractions

Camping Jelling is within 15 minutes' walk of Jelling village and 14 kilometres from the lively cultural centre of Vejle. LEGOLAND, Givskud Zoo and Lalandia waterpark are all within 25 kilometres, to keep you amused in your first week or so. Hiking and cycling trails surround the site, leading further afield to the hills of Vork, the moorlands of Randbøl and the woodlands of Frederikshåb. The diverse landscape of springs, woodlands and open meadows around Fårup Lake is around three kilometres away for boating and fishing. Another fab day out can be had 14 kilometres away at Vejle, a lively cultural city surrounded by forested hills. It's most known for its clifftop mill, the Vejle Museum of Art with the Wörzner collection and works by Rembrandt, and the 13th-century St. Nicolai Church, exhibiting the Haraldskær bog woman, a preserved body from the Iron Age. Closer to home, it's a short walk from the site to the Jelling Vikingmuseum, telling the tale of the village's past as a Viking royal capital. Jelling's archaeological remains are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and include a stone ship, two big burial mounds and the 10th-century Jelling Stones.
