  • Scenic countryside site in the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area
  • A half an hour’s drive from Křivoklát and its castle
  • Dog-friendly; chances to fish on the grounds in the Berounka river
Ah, Čechův Mlýn – tricky to pronounce if you’re not familiar with the local lingo, but most definitely a top place to stay. This quiet site is hidden in the wild Křivoklát section of the Central Bohemia region, a nature-rich part of the Czech Republic where salamanders, beavers and other water-dwelling beasts can be found. The pitches here are spread over a well-kept island, with a mill pond on the one side and the river Berounka on the other. With so much watery scenery about, stays at Čechův Mlýn are bound to revolve around long walks along the banks, paddling in the river and having a go at some fishing. Birdlife, including black storks and herons, thrives in these surrounds, so keep an eye out while you’re wandering around the area. There's also an open-air electricity museum housed in the mill, considered a technical and cultural monument. The park is a simple sort of spot with a large field for pitching and plenty of room for the kids to run about in (there are also places close by where they can take a dip in the safe and shallow river). Dogs can have a fab time snuffling through the greenery too, as Čechův Mlýn is a pet-friendly option. There is a restaurant on site during the summer months, while the village of Šlovice (about a kilometre away) also has a small bar.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Quiet peaceful site. Wildlife along the river at dusk including otter and kingfishers. We'll kept grass. Food kiosk is handy for a meal. Large site, plenty of space to choose from.

Disliked: The shower and bathroom is quite a walk. Takes a while to get there.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Agréablement surpris, nous nous attendions à un champ, mais finalement vaste terrain au bord d'un cour d'eau, des arbres, un espace buvette snack imprévu. En pleine nature, très calme.

Electric optional grass motorhome pitch

Liked: The site itself was in a beautiful place but was difficult to find.

Disliked: We were very disappointed that we had pre paid for the site. There was no one around, there was no indication that the site was open though a notice on the ( we presume to be the reception) said the site would open on May 1st. We arrived late afternoon after a tiring drive and set up. We saw no one for our entire stay. We left the following morning. To drive to visit our friends who live near Brno.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Staff were excellent. Pitch within the woods was beautiful and very carefully managed. Was not over-manicured. Firewood was provided (though you need to bring your own axe). Fireboxes provided. Water pipes well maintained. Very pleasant toilets and showers available in the mill building.

Disliked: Toilets are clean, though many of them are portable toilets which always smell pretty bad!

Local attractions

Being in the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area, there’s lots of space in these surrounds to make the most of. Go hiking and biking on pretty paths along the Berounka, try horse riding along top local trails or seek out some of the area's numerous castles, like the well-preserved hilltop specimen in nearby Křivoklát (30 minutes' drive). Rakovník (half an hour away) is another local spot that's worth a gander. Start by climbing the Vysoká Brána ('High Gate'), a Gothic fortification that's popular for its scenic views over the town's terracotta roofs. There's also a museum about the culture and wildlife of Rakovník and the surrounding region on the edge of Čermákovy Sady gardens. Ready for some city-touring times? Pilsen (an hour and 10 minutes) is perhaps best known for its eponymous pale lagers, so do make sure to swing by the Urquell Brewery if you're after a swig. Don't let all that beer distract you from the city's other highlights, though – there's a historic cathedral and synagogue to marvel at, not to mention a science centre and puppet museum.
