  • Peaceful rural creekside park 15 minutes' drive from Clinton
  • Two kilometres from fishing, swims and watersports at Kelly Lake
  • Simple, laidback pitches close to three provincial parks
Not one, not two, but three provincial parks await in the area around Thunderhoof Campground… if you’re in the market for stunning rural views and heaps of outdoor activities, it’s pretty clear you’ve come to the right place. The rural experience starts right on site – this British Columbia campground is in a creekside spot, with access to the stream for paddling or wildlife spotting. You can pitch your tent by the water too should you wish, or retreat to a secluded spot among the pines in the forest. Whichever you pick, you’ll be in a peaceful and laidback spot with simple facilities that just stretch to portable toilets and a washing-up area. Scooting out into the local area, there are biking trails, mountain hikes and caves or meadows galore to explore in the nearby parks (Edge Hills, Marble Range and Arrowstone, to be precise), along with pretty gorgeous views at almost every turn – you’ll want to make sure your camera’s charged for outings around here. A couple of kilometres down the road is the fab Kelly Lake, a top spot for summer days at its covered cabana and dock from which you can fish, swim, launch canoes or kayaks, or drift gently around on inflatable beach rafts. Come along in winter and the activity doesn’t drop – it’s all ice fishing, cross country skiing and snowy hikes (and the scenery’s pretty stunning in any season…) Pick up food to fuel all these antics 15 minutes’ drive away in Clinton, a small town that’s got a grocery store, petrol station and a couple of restaurants to its name.

Local attractions

Get your hiking boots at the ready – there are trails around here for all levels of experience, including waterside wanders at Pavilion Lake (half an hour’s drive) and uphill clambers at the likes of Butcher Peak and Mount Soues (both less than 10 minutes away). If you think four legs would be a better bet for getting around the area, have a word with the folk on site to see if they can help sort a horseback outing. Alternatively, take a chilled day by/in/on the water at Kelly Lake (a couple of minutes’ drive/half an hour walk). This part of the world is known as the Cariboo – and if you want to find out a bit about its past, your best bet is to head to Historic Hat Creek (35 minutes’ drive), which stands much as it did a hundred years ago and where you can ride on a stagecoach, try your hand at gold panning and take the kids on a scavenger hunt.
