Sitting pretty by the side of a lake near Mol in rural Flanders, EuroParcs Zilverstrand takes its name from the expanse of silvery-white sandy beach in the park. You’ll never be stuck for sporty things to do staying here, what with fishing, paddleboarding and sailing on the lake, an indoor pool and lots of cycling or walking trails in the surrounding woodland. Yes, kids can have a ball at Zilverstrand: it's got waterslides on the lake, a play area with swings and climbing ropes, and an entertainment team to keep them occupied with fun activities like leaf painting and karaoke singing. On days when the weather doesn’t play fair, they can head indoors to play table football, slot machines and trampolines. Grown-ups, don’t fret – there’s plenty for you too. You might like to relax poolside in the Turkish bath or sauna, play snooker or challenge each other/the kids to rounds of miniature golf. And although you’ll doubtless want to explore the local area, everything you need is pretty much provided on the holiday park. Everything needed to rustle up family meals is sold in the mini-market, and hungry kids can score a constant supply of treats at the snack bar. For more substantial sit-down meals, Brasserie Julia opens daily, serving tasty hot dishes, veggie options and a kids’ menu.

Local attractions

Active families can access walking trails in the surrounding area directly from the holiday park, as well as flat cycling routes heading along the waterways, or through nature reserves like Winkelsbroek and De Liereman (both 35 minutes’ drive or an hour and a half by bike). Left the bikes at home? That’s no excuse, as you can rent them on site. But the region round Mol isn’t all about getting active; there’s plenty of cultural stuff as well. Visit Postel Abbey (15 minutes) to see how the monks have lived since 1140, wander the well-maintained gardens and buy their artisan beer and cheese, or tour the meditation gardens dotted with contemporary sculpture Herkenrode Abbey (45 minutes). Art lovers might like to dip into the Flemish landscape paintings at the Jakob Smitsmuseum (10 minutes), while the lovely old city of Hasselt (50 minutes) rewards a trip with ponds full of koi carp in the colourful Japanese Garden, a Romanesque cathedral and shops selling the local speciality, genever gin. Kids getting bored? Teach them about endangered big cats and monkeys at Pakawi Park (20 minutes).
