  • Lakeside setting on the Eastern Grampians Scenic Route
  • 50 minutes to the Grampians National Park
  • Restaurant with terrace and mountain views
Lake Fyans Holiday Park, in Australia's Eastern Grampians, is a peaceful lakeside spot where visitors can do as much or as little as they want. There's a lot to do in the park itself, with a games room, a swimming pool, tennis courts and an adventure playground. The restaurant dishes up fresh home-cooked meals, and has an alfresco terrace with mountain views. Fridays are fish and chip night, and those in the know slip off with their takeaways to watch the sunset over the lake. Not every traveller can sit beside a lake in the Eastern Grampians and content themselves with the view. Fortunately, fishing, swimming and boating are among the fine spread of activities you can get up to on Lake Fyans, right from the site. If you can be tempted away from the lake, it's a five-minute drive to Pomonal, a handsome rural town, whose orchards (hence the name) have been largely replaced by orchids and flowers. The Pomonal Tunnel track makes for a decent ramble of an hour's length, rising from the scented fields to the top of the range for far-stretching views across Lake Bellfield and the Grampians national park.

Local attractions

Keen hikers continue the Pomonal trail on to Halls Gap, but you can also get there with a 10-minute car trip. The zoo is home to over 160 species, including endangered red pandas, meerkats and cheetas. Encounter sessions for the sturdy-hearted members of the party include opportunities to pat an alligator and pet a dingo. Twenty minutes' drive and you're in Brambuk - the National Park and Cultural Centre. As well as a hub point for the many hiking and biking trails through the surrounding wilderness, Brambuk is an opportunity to discover the ancient culture of the area's Aboriginal people and sample bushtucker grub in the café. Road trippers can join the Eastern Grampians Scenic Route (five minutes from site), or head to the official starting point in Ararat (half an hour). It's a pleasant half-day tour along the eastern edge of the mountains, stopping off in typical towns to take in the history and sample the wine. Half an hour past Halls Gap and you're in the Grampians National Park, a walkers' paradise of sandstone peaks and thundering waterfalls, rock art and wallabies. You won't want to leave; but if you're travelling further, Melbourne is a little under three hours away.
